I agree that Buffet treated her poorly in the way that he cut her off.

However, the futon thing shows what a whiner she was. She gets college and housing paid for, and she can't buy a futon? Ever hear of a "job"? Even a summer job could buy you apartment furnishings.

I think that was a very good lesson that Buffet tried to teach her. He helped her with the biggest and most important things, but expected her to become self-reliant.
