In DeKalb cheapist Gas price is $1.63 at both Mobil and Roadranger.
If NIU would contact cheapist Motels on the route and try negotiate a deal for game ticket holders
That could make the trip even more affordable for sum.

Please check and challenge these numbers:
If 3 people rent a car:
Car rental: $40-$90
Insurance: $30
Gas: $90
Motel room $65
Total: $275 divide by 3 =$92/person
