Senate Republicans Threaten Filibuster To Stall Auto Bailout Posted 12/10/2008

The fate of an auto bailout bill dimmed Wednesday even as the White House and Congress' Democratic leaders announced a deal.

Several Senate Republicans came out against the proposed plan, raising the possibility that a filibuster could stall it. GOP lawmakers had been excluded from bailout talks.

Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, a backer of the bill, told the AP it does not have the votes to pass.

"There is a great deal of reluctance to directly assist the automakers," said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md.

A handful of Republicans already have vowed to oppose the deal. Sen. David Vitter, R-La., told reporters the plan was "backwards" because it gives automakers cash first, then demands changes.

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, asked several questions about the bill in a letter to Democratic leaders. They ranged from why Cerebus Capital, Chrysler's owner, was not injecting more money into the automaker, to why the bill reopens a tax loophole for selling rail lines.

Transit agencies say they need the exception to deal with credit crunch financing issues.

The overall deal would provide $15 billion in emergency loans to GM and Chrysler. Ford, which isn't as bad off, opted out for now.

Last week the Big Three asked for $34 billion in loans. The $15 billion is thought to be just enough to keep GM and Chrysler afloat until President-elect Barack Obama takes office and expanded Democratic congressional majorities are seated. Another even larger aid package is likely then.

As part of the deal, President Bush will appoint a "car czar" to oversee the deal and demand the companies come up with restructuring plans or pay back the loans.

They might as well go ahead and file because I don't think the UAW will cave in.

UAW isn't going to make the wage/benefit concessions that would equalize to what Toyota/Nissan/BMW pays their employees that work down South and in Texas.

That killed it.

That just killed America. 03-weeping
Those foreign auto plants in the south were all subsidized by the taxpayers. Now my dad who worked for 32 years for GM is endanger of losing his pension, and health insurance. Now he's going to have to go back to work? What for $10/hr at walmart? 03-banghead

WalMart does not pay $10.00 an hour.

Yeah, and I'm thinking that's not a filibuster. If I "threaten" to kill you, could I be guilty of murder?

There were some Dims that voted against this measure. ....and I'm glad they did.

It was tied up procedurally because Dems didnt have the 60 votes. Reid couldn't get it brought to a vote. Do you really want me to find the exact quote from Reid that explains how the Republican's tied it up????

Did he save? Or did he live like there was no tomorrow? If the latter, I have no sympathy for him. I ALWAYS look at every day at my job as my potential last. I've also saved my ass off and made the right decisions. Some bad, but most good.

If your father relied on one company for his retirement, then I can't say I feel sorry for him.

The oil companies and the auto industry have been in cahoots for years. The Oil industry broke from the auto industry and drove oil to near $4.00 a gallon, which has done more to kill the auto industry than Dens or Repubs. UAW did not do much to help the cause because the greedy CEO were pulling down millions in salary and benefits making it look like they could afford anything.

Yeah, I'm thinking that "Oil Industry", assuming you mean Exxon, Chevron, and other American companies, doesn't have that much of an impact on the cost of a barrel of oil.

Nissans are built in Canton, Ms.

Maybe the "Big 3" need to start focusing on NON-Union areas. BTW, why ARE they the "Big 3"? What happened to the others like Packard? Ahhhh, bought out, pushed out, or taken over. **** the "Big 3".

RE: Adios Detroit, .... Big 3 Bailout dies in Senate.
They failed repeatedly to organize the foreign-owned auto plants proliferating down South, even now.

Their political action committee pumped millions -- $1,918,450 this election cycle alone, to be exact -- into the congressional campaigns of Democrats and only $12,500 into Republicans, according to opensecrets.org. In their 1999 contract, they won Election Day off and used it to back their (generally Democratic) candidates, a source of recurring irritation among the southern GOP stalwarts.

They ignored the Republicans, even auto state Republicans, who represent the so-called "New American Manufacturers" in places such as Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama.

Those are the same states whose senators stood astride the $14 billion auto bailout bill Thursday saying, "No" -- imperiling life as generations of United Auto Workers have known it.

Now a federal bailout for Detroit's automakers appears close to dead, delivering a crushing blow to a Michigan economy reeling from high unemployment, skyrocketing home foreclosures and sagging tax revenue. The obstructionists: southern Republicans determined to use a financial crisis to rework corporate balance sheets and rewrite collective bargaining agreements on their terms and timetables.

Paybacks can be hell when business meets politics, as union leaders, their members and tens of thousands of folks associated with the Detroit-based auto industry are seeing clearly in the wrangling to craft an emergency bill to throw lifelines to beleaguered General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC.

Stripped bare and put in the regional context of union vs. nonunion and domestic vs. foreign, the toughened conditions pushed by Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., are legislative cruise missiles aimed directly at Detroit's business model, the UAW's Solidarity House and 70 years of Big Three bargaining tradition.

There's a f'n reason why they aren't union. THIS IS WHY!

Hey, those non-union auto workers in the South are still employed, aren't they?

Yep. Thanks to those "compassionate conservatives". I wonder if the repubs on this board know that the new hires(those who replaced retired workers) are only making about $14 an hour. Granted they get benefits but $14 is not an exactly raking in the money. This whole republican thing it to break up the Unions. They will get their wish. Unfortunately, if the car companies go into bankruptcy, they will not come out. But hey, Mr Alabama will get what he wants-more Hyundais built in his state because people won't be able to buy American cars anymore. Sad.

It's too god dman cold to survive in a dbl wide trailer up here in the north. We need higher paying jobs!!!! Say goodbye to Voinovich, Good man but he's on the wrong team. Havent the Repukes done enough harm????? I can't believe Republicans let Bob Fckin Corker be the front man on this. Just think when Dems frame this loan as the same costs as a month on Iraq!!!!! Any state tied to the automobile industry will hang Republicans by their testicles. I can't believe they let this fail. I'm dumping all my stockss tommoroow at open and will pick them back up at noon. Probably make 20% It's going to be a bloodbath tomorrow. Dmb fckin ignorant Republicans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ask these Repubs how many tax dollars Hyundai got from Alabama for moving their plant there. I believe Kia is going to get/getting a boatload from Gorgia(?) for a new plant. How much did Mercedes get in tax dollars for moving their plant to Alabama(?). How much did Subaru get in Indiana? How much have Toyota and Honda recieved? It is a HUGE amount. But, hell with the American car makers. We shouldn't spend ANY tax dollars on the auto makers. THis isn't about tax dollars. It is about getting rid of unions and increasing sales in each of the above car companies sales in the southern states so they can make more money for THEIR states.
