A little bit more about him:

http://recruiting.scout.com/2/754416.html

Appears to be another guard for us, it seems like Kill is really grabbing some decent interior linemen. He didn't have any other offers, but he's a big kid who has good feet and will have time to put on some more muscle.

Another great pickup.

We need O-Lineman bad in the next few years. We lost 2 starters this year in Brost and Keller and 2 more, Onyebuagu and Adamski, are going to be seniors next season, so the more the merrier right now.

So are all of these verbals coming out since the bowl game announcement, or is this just the first we've heard about them.

A lot of recruits visited this past weekend (before the bowl was even announced) and quite frankly its recruiting season now that the HS Football season is over. Our season was technically over for a couple weeks so it gave us a good chance to get out there and get some commits.

Not a coincidence that weekend recruits may have been swayed by the buzz & the possibilities NIU was - and will be again - a bowl bound program to play for.

I annoint Sir Kill and his staff "Lords of the Gridiron"

He may be a great 'get' and here's hoping he is, but did I read correct that he had no other real offers??!!

Before we annoint Kill as a great recruiter (which he may turn out to be) and before we decide that it was or was not the bowl selection that got us this guy...Let's just settle on the premise that he came to us b/c were his best (or only) offer.

Crazy me, but (without knowing more) I get most excited about guys who choose us over other programs. There are only so many Michael Turner's out there.

Ifr we have to rely on another schools to do our recruiting we are in sad shape. I like the fact that we do our own recruiting and don't give a crap about who else is recruiting whom. Kill and his staff are doing their own evaluations which is good.

Oh gosh, do you really believe what you write.

Sure, I love the pride and confidence we have in our coaches (and recruiters) and certainly we can celebrate all of our kids who were lightly or not recruited at all and who panned out wonderfully at NIU, but please, just be realistic about the process.

You cannot actually believe that it is just us that knows all. Recruitment services and other coaches do plenty of homework as well. If a kid is not sought after, typically their is a reason. Sometimes, they get it wrong and it is us that is the benefactor. But, to be blind and believe that Kill (or Joe) has that supreme wisdom to tap into the unknown is foolish. Fact remains, if others had come our way, some of these recruits (we are now celebrating) would not be coming to NIU at all as we would have not offered them.

The above has really ZERO to do with any one recruit and is not an indictment of our class thus far...Just a statement.

I write this will full hope and some confidence that KILL is doing a fine enough job this year, but let us not be overjoyed when we "land" someone that nobody else wanted and pretend that we stole one.
That will be decided down the road b/c the early signs (on a kid sought by nobody), I am sorry, are not promising.

That's all.

Still think we need to get Holtstag in order to have a good class.

He's one guy. One guy doesn't make a football class good or bad.

NIU has cornered the market on diamonds in the rough. We are the only school that can find these players. Other schools are not capable. When you receive an NIU scholarship offer, you have made it.

I think if Tim Tebow transferred here tomorrow, we could call that a game-changer.

That's Tim Tebow not Jimmy Holtschlag. The rest of the group that went in with Tebow at Florida would have been a very good class, even without him.

I'm not saying there aren't difference makers or players you'd like to have, but to me one guy doesn't make a single recruiting class good or bad. He can help it (or hurt it), but I don't think one guy defines a class. And even if I thought one guy could take a class from being mediocre to good, it wouldn't be a kid (at least on the surface) like Holtschlag. It would be more a kid like Wells (a more sought after recruit) or guys like Hill or Lynch, who play the most important position on the field (QB, although Lynch may not end up there).

I just thought the idea that NIU "needed" Holtschlag for a good class was a stretch.

What?

http://edgytim.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=86397

A 2 star tackle? I'm not sure that's the type of guy who will "make" a class.

In fact we are in a real battle with WIU and Illinois State for him. Again, not 2 national powers.

I think maybe someone here is related...OR...has some sort of connection to that kid.
