Greek Riots
2008 Greek Riots from wikipedia

I was wondering what everyone thought of this. I think it's inspiring that so many students are showing their outrage after the police killed a 15 year old boy and lied about what happened. While I don't like violence, I think it's powerful that the rioters are expressing their anger at the symbols of government force, i.e. the police.

Hopefully everything will end peacefully and those responsible for the death of this kid will be punished.

News articles say this was just the final straw. They are sick of corruption (Kilpatrick, Langford, Blagojevich, Stevens anyone?) But also want more government spending.

And a few banks, several shops, a car dealership, some apartments, a law school library... not to mention injure a few dozen police that almost certainly had nothing to do with the shooting.

All of this supposedly because someone got shot by a police officer. That police officer has been charged with murder. How can the students justify such violence when the government acted exactly as it should in response to the officer shooting? At least LA had the good sense to wait until the officers had been acquitted.

When peaceful protest and civil disobedience prove to be ineffective...The tipping point becomes one of violence.

I'm just ready for Americas to start the peaceful protests.

the thought of civil disobedience gets me pissed. When the Riverside, cA police shot a woman with a gun (long story - Tiesha Miller) Jesse Jackson and his TV cameras came out here and did their civil disobedience which involved marching on a MAJOR highway during rush hour. I got stuck in that mess and didn't know why until the next day when I read about it in the paper. Civil disobedience only makes people who nothing to do with nothing suffer.

Well..I would agree that some types of protest may cause some problems..but.. Would you rather Rosa Parks had just went to the back of the bus? Would you prefer that only men were allowed to vote? Id say the inconvenience is a price we pay for living in a so called free country. I'd be prepared for more with the current status of our nation and the increasing power of the state. The tipping point may be closer that you think.

Sure beats sending you over with all your AK 47's and start shoting everyone. Besides, Greek food is good so if you want to pony up the money for a flight, I will go and try my best to get this settled.
