Box score says he got 4 minutes and Henry-Ala 1. I know it's early yet but I expected much better from both this season. With Greene out we only used 9 guys and considering those 2 guys minutes it was more like 7; that they aren't redshirting Grimsley baffles me.

RE: Illinois Question
My first impressions after watching this team for the first time this year:
Fisher - What can't you say about Al?!
Mincy - Great defense and leadership.
Sullinger - All heart and guts. He just wants it more. Demetric Shaw's influence anyone?
Singletary - Needs to play within himself and keep himself under control emotionally.
Simpson - Some defensive lapses but that is to be expected based on a new system. Reminds me athletically of Kyrem Massey, Mike Scott, etc. Should be a good one.
Parks - Looks improved. Needs to learn to finish at the rim. Played decent D against a 7 footer. He will help in the MAC.
Woods and Henry-Ala -Both looked completely lost.
McKee - Played hard and had a couple of key 3s. They'll need more of that to take pressure off of Al and Chris.
All in All a good showing. Let it get away though. I hate the prevent offense. Took the intensity out of the team and I think that showed on the defensive end of the floor.

RE: Illinois Question
If Tyree Evans becomes eligible, he could take some pressure off Fisher needing to score so much, and allow the entire backcourt more rest. I think having Greene last night may have helped, but I am NOT using that as an excuse.
As I mentioned in another post, it is entirely possible that Grimsley did not want to redshirt, for a variety of reasons.
I agree that, based upon what we'd been hearing, both Woods and Henry-Ala must be considered disappointments thus far.
The bottom line is that Illinois figures to finish in the middle of a usually overrated Big Ten, and the game was on a neutral court. Plus, Kent State lead for about 3/4 of the game. So, and not taking anything away from Illinois, Kent State lost a game they probably should have won.

good points.
Another third option for scoring down the stretch needs to develop. When games get tight and your jump shooters are feeling the pressure you have to be able to run some offense to get some high percentage shots. Either Parks or Simpson will have to be dependable enough for us to go down there and get a bucket when we need it. Al just didnt have his magic last night, but thats ok. This team will need to develop just like all the others, that being said, we're pretty good so far, just need to keep workin.

RE: Illinois Question
Simpson hit a couple of nice shots, but someone needs to explain to him he is not our first or second option. He was jacking from everywhere. And I hope he gets better defensively. He cost us a couple of baskets by just forgetting where his man was on the floor. Woods, is lost out there - period. I think Geno puts him in, and knows within a minute or two if he will have "it" on that particular night. If not, he will sit down for the rest of the game unless fouls dictate he has to play. Henry-Ala got in last night and fouled 12 seconds into his appearance on an over aggressive hedge. I think right now, the game is just too fast and too big for Frank. He will improve.

He will improve? This guy is a Junior that played at this level as a Freshman. A year ago, who would've ever thought Parks would far exceed this recruit.

RE: Illinois Question
GoldenFlasher Wrote:So why did parks not go in during overtime... he still only had four fouls.
Brandon had a tough time with rotations on defense. He wasn't quite quick enough to get back after hedging. The Illinois bigs were getting open looks screening and fading to 10-feet or rolling to the basket. Geno thought Simpson would be quicker defending that. He was, but you can't defend a shot like the turnaround Tisdale hit in OT. A 7-footer turning, fading towards the baseline and hitting a 10-footer over a long 6-8 defender like Simpson ... that's a big-time play.
Anyway, that's the reason. It was a tough game for BP. He also missed a lot of short shots he should have converted. Games like this will happen. This is still his first real opportunity to play, so he'll have his ups and downs. So far, he's had far more ups than downs, and that's a good thing for KSU.
One more potential good thing ... while the rest of KSU's roster is struggling to find its legs, BP should be somewhat fresh today against a team with more size than KSU.

RE: Illinois Question
It's too early to get down on Frank. He's going to be very steady, especially once we get into MAC play. The guy defends, he hits the open shot, he is smart. He'll get more time as we go along.

RE: Illinois Question
It has been decades since I've played any organized basketball. Could someone please explain what "hedge" and "hedgeing" are? I'm sure it is nothing new, but a new term that is in vogue.

Kent 76 Wrote:It has been decades since I've played any organized basketball. Could someone please explain what "hedge" and "hedgeing" are? I'm sure it is nothing new, but a new term that is in vogue.
Hedging is a way for a defense to handle a screen. When you see a big on offense come above the key to set a pick for a guard, instead of switching, the guard on defense goes over the top of the screen as the big on defense jumps out to force the offensive guard higher, dribbling away from the basket above the circle. That gives the defensive guard time to recover from the screen.
When the screening big man rolls to the basket, if the hedge is done correctly, it is usually difficult for the guard to find him on the cut. Teams need to have good rotations defensively to help until the big who hedged the screen and forced the guard higher can then get back and pick up his original man.
In Friday's case, Parks effectively hedged the screen high, but was slow getting back in time to guard Tisdale. With Parks caught in no man's land, Illinois' guards were patient off the hedge, and found Tisdale for open 8-to-10 footers over and over again ... and a dunk or two.
That's a long-winded explanation. A coach would be able to describe it better, but that's essentially what a hedge is and what it is meant to do.

I was originally told it would be, but it appears they are only showing the championship game.
