Men's Basketball Signs Adrien Coleman

Georgia native inks letter of intent to play hoops for UAB next season

Nov. 20, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's basketball team has signed shooting guard Adrien Coleman to a National Letter of Intent, announced UAB head coach Mike Davis. Coleman is the first signee of the 2009-10 class.

"Adrien is a highly skilled player who could step in and help us immediately," UAB head coach Mike Davis said. "Adrien has all the tools to be a terrific basketball player and should fall right in to the long line of great guards that have played at UAB. We are excited to have him a part of UAB basketball."

Coleman, a 6-4, 190-pound shooting guard hailing from Stone Mountain, Ga., is listed as a three-star prospect by both Rivals.com and Scout.com. Additionally, he was ranked as the No. 69 shooting guard in the nation by ESPN.com.

Coleman comes to UAB from Stephenson High School where he was coached by Lawanza Crutcher. He has helped lead Stephenson to a combined record of 43-14 over the last two seasons.

During his junior season in 2007-08, Coleman led his team and ranked third in DeKalb County with an average of 22.2 points per game. He ranked 11th in the county with an average of 2.9 steals per contest in leading his team to a 19-7 overall record. Additionally, he was 20th in DeKalb with an average of 6.7 rebounds per game and fifth in field goal percentage inside the three-point line (.640)

As a sophomore, Coleman averaged played a big role, in helping Stephenson to a 23-7 overall mark. That season, Coleman led his team and ranked seventh in DeKalb County with 16.1 ppg. He also ranked sixth in the county in steals per game (3.1) and eighth in field goal percentage inside the arc (60.0).

Coleman selected by UAB after receiving interest from LSU, South Alabama, Clemson, Murray State and UCF, among others.

Welcome to UAB! Sounds like a great addition.

I imagine Fields will get a similar press release very shortly.

I think if Fields signing was forthcoming, they would have waited and announced them both together.

So, to me it sounds like we have ONE signee. And a 6-8 that changed their mind.

We probably should hit the juco ranks to fill our roster with upperclassman.

Newspaper today says Fields is still an early signee but his paperwork hasn't arrived yet.

Well, if it is an NCAA thing, at least we'll have a long time to get it straight. Something we didn't have with Roderick.

And that brings up a good point. I think people sometimes forget about some of the talent we've picked up late. Roderick's a perfect example. That being said, I realize we could have really used him last year.

I'll go canvas the YMCA at lunch and report to CMD, asap. Hopefully I can find another "diamond in the dirt".

No he didnt, I posted a thread earlier about Cameron Moore stating that he is developing at a rapid pace and could be a big time player for our team. The thread title was "Diamond in the Dirt for UAB Basketball?"

Who said anything about the sky falling. I just observed that we have 1 signee compared to probably 7 or 8 previous commitments.

In the sales world, that would be deemed a "closure problem" or something like that.

As far as paperwork, the last I checked, a fax was fairly rapid but I guess its possible that they waited untill the last possible day and then sent it snail mail.

In years past, UAB has tended to wait untill all commitments were in and announce them together. But, then again, we have never had some many guys change their mind so maybe they are just throwing us a bone.

RE: Coleman signing @UABSports.com (Fields?)
So someone was intentionally misusing the phrase "diamond in the rough" ?

Diamond in the rough
Someone (or something) that has hidden exceptional characteristics and/or future potential, but currently lacks the final touches that would make them (or it) truly stand out from the crowd.

The phrase is metaphorical and relates to the fact that naturally occurring diamonds are quite ordinary at first glance, and that their true beauty as jewels is only realized through the cutting and polishing process.
She may seem shy and ordinary right now, but give her a couple more years - she truly is a diamond in the rough.
