San Diego State running back Justin Green received his release yesterday from the Aztecs, allowing him to transfer to Mesa College. He plans to play a year for the Olympians so he can be recruited again.
Green, who set the CIF-San Diego Section career rushing record at University of San Diego High, met yesterday with SDSU coach Tom Craft.
"I'm a power runner," Green said. "The offense last year was perfect for me, but the new scheme doesn't fit. I think it's a great coaching staff, and I wish I fit in the picture. I admire Coach Craft and everything he's done."
Green, a 6-foot, 220-pounder, will be a sophomore in the fall. He was the second-leading rusher in limited playing time behind Larry Ned as a redshirt freshman last year, carrying 24 times for 133 yards (5.5) and one touchdown.
His section rushing record in three seasons at USDHS is 5,397 yards.
"Mesa is a good running team, so hopefully it will be a steppingstone for me," Green said.
Mesa running back Jimmy Green, a La Jolla High alum who is no relation to Justin, received a scholarship after last season from Colorado State.
"Jimmy and Justin are very similar in style and stature," Mesa coach Martin Moss said. "Justin is a quality young man and athlete. If he does well here, I anticipate he will have plenty of offers."
Green is the second SDSU sophomore to seek and receive a release from Craft. Quarterback Jon Stoner, who was fourth on the depth chart after spring ball, announced last week he plans to transfer to a Division I-A or I-AA school.
In spring practice, senior James Truvillion, junior DeAngelo Nedd and redshirt freshman Michael Franklin emerged as the top three running backs. Highly recruited incoming freshman Frederick Collins of La Quinta High will join the competition in fall camp for playing time. Craft's offense will utilize three to five backs.
