Philadelphia is not, I repeat, not a cesspool. Like any huge, aging city, it has plenty of grim spots. That being said, as transplanted Ohio native, there's lots to love about Philly. It's well worth making it a destination on any day of the week.

Any fan of a MAC school would be well served by using a game @ Temple as a reason to visit the Delaware Valley.

Seconded. Philly is great. Even if you only visited Center City and took the subway to the game, there's enough stuff to keep you busy for a long weekend and then some. Can't wait until CMU plays at Temple again.

Its difficult to do an apples-to-apples comparison of Lincoln Financial Field (capacity 67,594) to your average MAC stadium (I'd guess average capacity 25-35,000 - anyone have this actual number?) - Filling 25% of the Linc puts us at around 17,000, which I would say is a fair estimate of Tuesday's attendance.

I was there - attendance on the home side looked larger than our previous two games, while the visitor's side seemed more sparse (understandable w/ the Tuesday night schedule).

What I don't understand is this - the MAC as a conference averages around 15-18,000 attendees per game. What kind of attendance do you want from Temple? Do you expect us to fill a stadium that clearly is too big for our program?

I don't think Temple fans need to apologize for not filling a 67,000 seat NFL stadium that was not built for us. Winning will put more butts in seats, but for now we get above average attendance for a MAC team.

I think alot of people expect Temple to draw between 25 and 30K just because of the huge population area that Temple can draw from with Philly having a 2 million+ population. The next two biggest cities in the MAC are Buffalo and Toledo, and even they have problems getting fans in the stands. I think someone has already said this, but winning draws fans. I.E. Toledo, when were winning we have about 27K in the glass bowl, but when we are not winning we are praying for 15K this Saturday in the rain.

I think Lincoln-Financial field is great for the Eagles and so is Philly itself, but not for Temple until they start winning and drawing good crowds for games other than Penn St.

It also has to do with how when people like VE come on our board and talk about how they have the best attendance in the MAC. Two people posted it to be untrue and then we all watch the game on ESPN and we see them showing the same student section. It did not look or sound like many people were in the stadium.

Temple has a lot of challenges that I think are unique to the MAC - yes, there's a large population base, but you've got a recent history or losing football, plus the popularity of the NFL to contend with (I imagine two challenges Buffalo also faces). Add that to playing in a stadium 6 miles away from campus (doesn't seem like much but is pretty significant for an urban campus).

That being said, there've been several times over the past two seasons that this team drew over 20,000 (excluding PSU - Navy, Miami, NIU last season), and with more wins, the attendance will grow.

Didn't Temple lead the MAC in attendance last season? And if you want to exclude the Penn State game, we still averaged about 21k, which is I think top 2 or 3 in the conference. That doesn't look like much in a 67,000 seat stadium, but its something.

As for ESPN showing the "same student section" - here's a seating chart for the Linc. Looking at the "visitors" side (the Temple side for home games), the stands were pretty full from goal line to goal line, section 124-116 in the lower level (purple). The band occupied the far right section (116). Students were seated in the adjacent two sections (117 & 118). From 119-121 you'll find season ticket holders - these sections are typically full. Both endzones were sparse. The visitors side was very sparse. No one sits in the upper levels.

If I could find the section-by-section seat totals, it would probably help substantiate the attendance numbers. I'd appreciate the input of anyone from Ohio who attended (the group of Ohio folks I ran into were from Maryland).

If you include the Penn State game, i'm sure Temple was near the top. However, if NIU includes the SF game last season then were at the top. I'm sure WMU and CMU had crowds well over 20k too.

I'm confused, is this picture taken before the game started? You said it was filled from goal line to goal line but i'm not seeing it in this picture. I'm looking at both sides of the 50-yard line and i see lots of empty seats. I'm assuming the student sections you are talking about are not visible in this picture, correct?

Nick has a job and a family. He does not have time to sit here and wait for everyone's opinions or reactions to his picks. As for all of your in-game picks, would you care to do this every week for every game involving a MAC team for a decade? Just post your picks here on the forums every time Real Cloutier 9.

That picture was taken before an Eagles game...

The poster was just using the picture to show how many sections are in the lower bowl...

Apologies if this wasn't clear - I was posting the picture of the Linc to show the sections so as to provide a visual aid when describing which sections were full. I've since updated the image and language to make this a little clearer. Also, apologies for the HUGE pic (didn't realize how large it was until after I posted).

As for NIU including their Soldier Field game - the difference is that the Penn State game was held in Lincoln Financial Field, Temple's home stadium, not 65 miles away in a completely different city.

Incidentally, WMU averaged a little under 19,500 for their 2007 home games. CMU average about 18,700 per game. Excluding the Iowa game, NIU averaged 17,800 per game last season. Excluding the Penn State game, Temple averaged about 20,800 last season.

Northern Illinois drew 61,000 for the Iowa game. Temple drew 69,000 for the Penn State game. Where are you getting your numbers from?

It does look like Temple led the MAC last season in attendance, excluding the Penn State game. If no one from the MAC except Temple averaged over 20k last season then it was definitely a down year for attendance. There are three teams this year averaging over 20k (NIU, CMU, and WMU). Temple is 9th this season.

Temple is only averaging 17,500 this season. They need to play Navy and Penn St at home to pump up the average like they did last year. 04-cheers
