Complete, Utter Arrogance of the Detroit Sports Press
I originally posted this on chippewasinsider.com web site:
For decades, my blood has boiled over the lack of coverage and respect for MAC teams. Once again, after Toledo's upset over Michigan, the writers chose to take the low road rather than give the conference, who is also in its NEWSPAPER'S FOOTPRINT, any accolades whatsoever.
In today's electronic version of the Detroit Free Press, here we have Drew Sharp's column. What did he do, simply cut-and-paste a bunch of online posts by the Michigan lemmings who are on suicide watch? Come on Drew, how about a column that's just a bit more intellectual? You know, something that actually requires some research, knowledge and analysis. Such as....
Nearly EVERY national football power has had significant DOWN YEARS since the reduction of scholarships. It's simply Michigan's turn!
EVERY Big Ten team, except Ohio State, has lost to a MAC team in the post-modern football era. Even the Buckeyes have had their moments, including this year, being behind Ohio U in the fourth quarter.
The majority of Big Ten losses to MAC teams were squads who DID NOT go on to win the MAC.
MAC teams have been competitive against Michigan over the past three years. How soon you forget those games against Ball State, Eastern Michigan, and Miami. IT WAS INEVITABLE that U-M would wind up on the losing side in one of these games.
All Drew Sharp accomplished in his column was the perpetuation that the MAC is a league to be ignored and disregarded. And the beat goes on ......

Hard to believe it could be that negative, but there you go. UT is not that much farther from his paper than UM, and as you said, this town sells a hell of a lot of the Freep. My guess is he's going to get a little bit of mail over this one.

Michigan can't score this year which makes every game they play close. Toledo didn't make the mistakes that many MAC teams make. Toledo has an experienced QB which helps in a kind of enviroment like Michigan Stadium. They game came down to a couple big plays. The pick six for 100 yards and a couple of fg that went in for Toledo and wide for Michigan. Sometimes its better to be lucky that good. The Big Ten is weak except for Penn State and Michigan State.....the rest are flawed teams that aren't much better than the MAC west this year.

Good point. For instance, I won't bother.

Unfortunately, poor journalism is everywhere. After the hard fought rivalry game between Kent State and Akron last week that took 2 OTs to decide, noted moron Elton Alexander started his article off in the Cleveland Plain Dealer by calling the game a "comedy of errors" in his 1st sentence. The kids deserved better, they're not pros and there's 2 ways to cover the same results, and the Akron-Beacon Journal proved that by running some good articles and saying Kent State deserved a better fate rather than accentuating the negative.

Back in the days when I dealt with deadwood, I was once at a convention during which the Plain Dealer was called "the most consistently disappointing newspaper in America."

Up in Ann Arbor today talking to a UM fan. Told him the Free Press had stated that UM lost to a superior team in Illinois and an inferior team in Toledo. His response? "I thought that's why they play the game. If you win you're the superior team, right?" Hats off to the guy at Trader Joe's for recognizing a simple fact.

RE: Complete, Utter Arrogance of the Detroit Sports Press
And I got my local paper today and they ran an article from Michael Rosenberg of the Detroit Free Press: DFP Wrote:Rodriguez has done an awful coaching job this season. Michigan is 2-4 and just lost to Toledo, which should never happen.
Toledo isn’t just a Mid-American Conference team; it’s a bad MAC team, a much worse outfit than Appalachian State last year.
Appalachian State, despite being in the FCS (formerly Division I-AA), was one of the 60 best teams in the country. Toledo was 123rd in the Jeff Sagarin’s ratings, behind 18 I-AA teams.
Ouch, can't even give respect where it's due for Toledo going on the road and beating them.

Just like politicians, these Michigan sportswriters play to their audience - tell them what they want to hear. Keep them dumb and happy (or not). Keep them believing that UM should win just because they are scUM.

I've been b*itching about the Detroit media for years. The MAC is not even on the radar of the Detroit media. In this state there are two college teams and the pro teams. When a Michigan MAC team plays MSU or UM the media covers the MAC team like they are from another state, not like they are another one of the home teams. Last time I checked a map EMU is closer to Detroit than any other D1 school.
IMO, this contributes to low attendance at EMU. Most of the sports fans in the Detroit area are not even aware of EMU. Most people are surprised or doubtful when they here that there are five D1 FB teams in the state. To make it worse for EMU they only get token coverage by the Ann Arbor News, who often doesn't cover EMU games with their own reporters.
I really wish these papers would contract HuronDave for a weekly MAC report.

At least Sharp didn't refer to the MAC as the "MAC Conference". Those words are usually a surefire indicator that a person has no clue.
