RE: Will there be unintended consequences of this?
I'd suggest buying stock in aluminum foil producers as there will likely be a spike in demand.

Did you read this?
"They may be called on to help with civil unrest and crowd control."
"Soldiers will also learn how to use the first ever non-lethal package that the army has fielded...referring to crowd and traffic control equipment and non-lethal weapons designed to subdue unruly or dangerous individuals without killing them."
These are the Army's spokesbureaucrat's words...not mine.
We all know that every government initiative expands in its scope after its implementation....Maybe this will be the first to buck that trend.

That would/should be easily defeated by the Posse Comitatus act. ...then again, Clinton/Reno kinda already broke that mold, with no repercussions.
I agree. As military man, Im glad to see that you understand this. Im not sure that most of America will. My prediction is that this will not be stopped. 911 has warped the critical thinking skills of most Americans. They are now willing to allow almost any intrusion into their basic rights and really dont care about the consitution...as long as the "security theater" makes them feel safe.

I suspect the motivations for this are:
1. provide units that have been deployed in dangerous situations with some stability
2. compensate for the deployment abroad of national guard units (the army units would be training for tasks normally done by the national guard)
3. provide non-lethal training for tasks that may be required elsewhere (Iraq, ???)
4. Prepare to help with Homeland Security in the event of terrorist attack under the new administration (non-specific non-natural disaster)
Should they actually need to be used, it would clearly take a repeal of posse comitatus, and it would take an event like 9/11 for that to happen. I guess I just don't perceive the likelihood of US troops being used domestically for sinister purposes to be as great as you do...

I agree..not likely to happen...but..if used..the vast majority of government indoctrinated Americans would applaud it without a thought. Im just uncomfortable with the judgment of those in power having this resource at hand.
