QUICK START PROPELS DAYTON OVER AUSTIN PEAY 42-0

September 21, 2002

The University of Dayton football team scored two touchdowns before the Austin Peay Governors were able to run two offensive plays, launching the Flyers to a 42-0 win in Clarksville, Tennessee Saturday afternoon. UD had 20 different defensive players make tackles in its second shutout in three games, while on offense nine Flyers carried the ball and eight caught passes. Dayton led 28-0 at halftime.

UD is now 3-0 and ranked #1 among NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Majors. Austin Peay falls to 2-2.

Dayton kicked off to start the game, but on the first play from scrimmage, Dayton safety Mark Kasmer intercepted a Matt Schmitz pass, giving UD a short field to work with. After Geno Mattioda scored the first of his two touchdowns, Jay Bailey returned the kickoff but was stripped of the ball by Chris Dearth. Kasmer was as opportunistic as ever, recovering the fumble and setting up another short scoring drive.

That turned out to be more than the Dayton defense would need. The Flyers allowed the Governors no closer than the UD 29-yard line, and held APSU to just 65 yards on the ground. Bailey came into the game averaging twice that himself, but he also came into the game with a foot injury. His heart was willing, but his foot was not, and he was held to just 27 yards on 10 carries (almost half of that came on his next-to-last-carry in the fourth quarter that went for 13 yards).

Kasmer added another interception in the second quarter. He also batted away two passes and was second on the team with five tackles. Brian Heizman led UD with three solo hits and eight assisted tackles.

Dayton quarterback Kelly Spiker shook some more of the rust off with 235 yards in total offense. Spiker ran 14 times for 67 yards and a TD, and completed nine of 21 passes for 168 yards. Mattioda gained 62 yards on ten carries with two scores. Tony Hurps returned to the lineup for the first time this season. The Pioneer Football League
