RE: Gibson's Donuts
Cal and Tommy both go to Gibson's alot. Don and Tommy play golf together and even take trips to Scotland to play golf. Go in and sit down and Mr. Deweese might even throw a hot donut at you. Its just one of those places where you'll see 10 people you know on a Sat or Sun morning and everybody is in a good mood. I go at least once a week. The other posters are right-cheap donuts late at night. Go after a Tigers game on the way home and get them for the next morning for your kids

RE: Gibson's Donuts
the apple fritters are by far the best.

as for past donut places, McLaurin's (sp) Bakery on Highland, while not really a donut shot, had the best donuts in town first thing in the morning. Not the best later in the day, but when they were fresh within a couple hours, they would melt in your mouth. Alas they closed in the late 80s soon after I found out about them.

And while Gibson's has had a few owners over the years, the product has remained consistent. Unlike the old Howards, which used to rival Gibson's when they had the store on Union. But then they sold it, and that store went downhill, and the Summer store has never been very good. My kids used to like to go to the Summer store instead of Gibson's only because they had the giant donuts. I've broken them of that now.

McLaurin's also had specialty stuff, we would always get the Christmas tree made from mini-cinamon rolls for Christmas Eve morning. It was a family tradition growing up. I miss that place.

Marvel's was a good one too, fancy cakes and good donuts.

McLaurin's did my wedding cake. It was a carrot cake and it was my husband's favorite. He grew up using that bakery.

Great donuts, they just about melt in your mouth.

I didn't know he used to be an SEC fan, but he is all blue now. That guy loves the Tigers. He sits in the seat directly in front of me at football games and always has a good time. Last time I was in there he bet me that I couldn't eat a dozen glazed in an hour. I did it, but almost went into renal failure and forgot how to speak for about thirty minutes, not to mention I did not eat again until dinner the next evening.

The place is great and I have never had a bad experience there, in fact it has always been delicious.

The Summer store was the originally the Waring store. It was good when it was in its original location. I grew up going to Howard's long before I'd ever heard of Gibson's. The summer location was a gas/service station before. I never could get used to the thought of eating donuts made in what had been a service station.

RE: Gibson's Donuts
I sure do remember Thornton's on Lamar. Must not have been as bad a neighborhood as I remember.

There was a great bakery on Jackson in Midtown that my grandmothers both frequented. Can't remember the name.

But I have to say that the most heavenly, warm, melt-in-your mouth, to-die-for, to-kill-for donuts were the ones I used to buy around midnight in Nashville at a donut shop on West End not far from Vanderbilt. I think it may have been a Krispy Kreme. Always stopped there after babysitting on the weekends, and they were hot off the presses then! Anyone know what I am talking about?

RE: Gibson's Donuts
for college students like myself at the UofM, Gibson's is a second home. My friends and I are in there so much that we know which night the different people work. You have to go after 11 to get 6 for $1. And all winter they have pumpkin spice donuts...AMAZING. pop them in the microwave for 8 seconds and it's just about as close to perfection as you can get. it's a Memphis classic.

oh wow....yep, i do!
i went to school up there my freshman year, & we made a donut run one night. the girl who drove wound up locking her keys in the car, so we just *had* to go back inside, order more donuts, & wait for the locksmith to arrive.

if i remember correctly, a white castle wasn't too far down the street from that one, too.
