Because neither "liberals" nor "conservatives" care about McCain, but the everyone cares someway about Obama to make everything about him an issue.

Pretty much.

Obama:
- Dems love him (though less after FISA/defense changes)
- Moderates know he's not Bush
- Republicans think he's socialist, muslim, and a terrorist who hates America
- Libertarians think he's unfit to govern

McCain:
- Dems know he's 4 more years of Bush ... only somewhat better
- Moderates know he's 4 more years of Bush ... only worse
- Republicans know he's not Obama and refuse to pay attention to anything else
- Libertarians think he's unfit to govern
