$1.6M NIH grant for UAB and research partners
The National Institutes of Health will distribute an additional $1.6 million over the next five years to a joint program between the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Purdue University and Rutgers University.

The Purdue-UAB-Rutgers Botanicals Research Center for Age-Related Diseases was formed in 2000 and investigates the composition and effects of dietary supplements.

The extended grant funds two UAB projects:

One investigates the effects of dietary supplements on blood pressure and the vascular system. The other involves research into the prevention of vision loss and cataract disease by dietary supplements. The grant also provides continued funding for UAB's core facility on in vivo analysis.

The Purdue-UAB-Rutgers Botanicals Research Center for Age-Related Diseases is one of five nationwide to receive funding from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and the Office of Dietary Supplements.

UAB's Stephen Barnes, a professor of pharmacology and toxicology, is co-director of the center and a lead investigator. Professor Michael Wyss is also a lead investigator.
