Why doesn't Missouri state join the sun belt?
The sun belt is a rising league and with the addition of Mizzou st. would be getting closer to having a conference championship game

First, do not call us Mizzou State.
Second, the Valley at its current state is light years ahead of the Sun Belt.
Third, the other reason we would consider leaving the Valley is if we want to go to FBS in football. And only then would we probably consider a move to CUSA to do so.

Ya I don't see Mo State going to the Sun Belt. It would either be C_USA to move up to DI football or the Missouri Valley moving to D-I in football in the next 5 or so years?

Is this actually being discussed? If so, would all current members move up to FBS?

I don't think the MVFC will ever make the move as a whole. Too many schools struggle financially as it is. MSU needs to get their house in order if they ever want to move up. UNI doesn't seem to have that desire but if it came down to it, I think they could manage the move up. ISU I believe is discussing and thinking about a move in hopes of joining the MAC some day. I don't think any other schools could pull it off. Except maybe Wichita. If they ever bring back football, it will be with the plan of getting to FBS level at the earliest possible time.

What do you mean "get their house in order"? From reading their fanbase on this site, you would think that the Univ. could make the jump tomorrow. How are their facilities? Commitment to football? Is there a dominating force/team on your league (sorry, but not that familiar with FCS)? What conference do you think they would want to join if they did move up?

UNI seems to always have a decent team in that they are consistently challenging their in-state rivals. Why do you say they don't really have a desire to move up? Has the Univ. Administration made that well known?

If you go by what their delusional fanbase posts on these boards, Ill St. (please stop with the ISU) is ready to jump to the Big 12 or C-USA at worst. Pretty Funny stuff. Facts are, if Ill St. made the jump they would have to go to the SunBelt.

How about SIU? Southern had a good run not too long ago and their hoops have been very good very recently. I would think that they are far better equipped, or at least closer and more ready, for a move up than Ill St. SIU would be a good fit in the SunBelt with WKU, MTSU, and even Ark St.

RE: Why doesn't Missouri state join the sun belt?
MSU has financial issues. Their fanbase is delusional. To make the move, they'd have to upgrade their facilities. Their attendence isn't great, money isn't there and neither are the results on the field. They think they'll jump to CUSA if it happens.

UNI has pretty much said that they won't make the move unless they have to do so. They're happy where they are and they're usually one of the top teams in the MVFC. The AD doesn't have the largest budget, but they use it well.

ISU has the ability to make the jump. I know there were a lot of rumors flying around over the summer/fall about steps being taken to upgrade the stadium and taking steps behind the scenes to set themselves up for a move. I think they could be successful in making the jump if they get that opportunity. Sun Belt is definitely an option and probably makes the most sense. The MAC is where they want to be.

SIU is in a financial black hole. The football program has dropped off some and the basketball coach is sucking all the money out of the University. It says a lot when he's taken a once proud and respected program and made it the laughingstock of the MVC and they simply can't afford to fire him because they can't pay the buy out. They're in no position to move up. Even if they wanted to.

Thanks for the insight. 04-cheers

Not as "behind the scenes" as they think.

I admit I haven't followed too closely. There was some talk on another Valley board that I kept up on some, but gave up on that one as it's so poorly run. So I'm not sure what steps have been taken in the last 6 months or so or what's been said. I venture over to the ISU board to talk basketball from time to time. I may have to check out the football forum.

First.

Whomever thinks the MVFC can move up as a unit needs to take a few minutes to read the Division I Manual. You can only move to FBS by being invited to join an FBS league.

Second.

While the Valley has been a good league and stable Creighton is likely a top candidate for the new Catholic Big East. Some think Evansville and maybe even Indiana State could be A10 candidates. Illinois State's president has already said they want to go FBS, UNI is exploring FBS so two decades of stability may be ending.

Third.
The Valley is a better basketball league than the Sun Belt, yet Missouri State has no NCAA appearances in the past decade despite being #21 in the RPI once year and having won the Valley in regular season and making the Valley championship game. The Bears could actually be the standard-bearer of the conference instead of living in the shadow of the schools respected by the selection committee.

The Sun Belt has two teams in easy bus trip distance with fans that know how to get to Springfield (or at least Branson) that would likely support Missouri State's entry.

CUSA with 14 members is less likely to add teams and if you look at the membership, who is going to go to bat for the Bears? The schools most associated with basketball are located in the eastern time zone and likely to support adding schools like James Madison. None of the schools in the west are particularly close to Springfield except for Tulsa and they are almost certainly leaving for the Big East (a door opened for their basketball because they play FBS football, they left the Valley years ago because they needed a conference for football, while Wichita State just gave up on football. Tulsa labored for a time in a WAC that was far flung and not very good just because football mattered).

Very well said...

It's startling to see the conference RPI differences in basketball, but like you said... What has being in the MVC done to help us out?

They apparently do not want anything to do with the SBC. Their aspirations are higher. I thing they want the FBS gods to send down a gold plated invitation to the MVC before even considering moving up to FBS. Good luck with that Mo State.

I think it comes down to basketball is the top priority there and the Sun Belt is a step down from the MVC.

Not sure I follow. The MVC is the stronger conference and even with the loss of Creighton, it will remain so.

What makes you say that...

The fans may not be all too excited, but I can assure the administration understands.

WE ARE. MO STATE
