RE: Is WXSM failing?
As it stands right now, the hosts in the market are by and large apologists.

RE: Is WXSM failing?
Well. the latest book is out and it does not look good for The Monster-

http://www.radioandrecords.com/RRRatings.../2008&CE=0

WFHG, with no local programming and a poorer signal, has tied WXSM in the latest trend.

Mind you, generally in the summer time sports stations' ratings go down. I attest the latest ratings to be that WFHG has NASCAR and WXSM doesn't.

Suggestion- move the Braves to WJCW, NASCAR to WXSM. The talk shows seem to have stronger relationships within NASCAR circles than they do baseball. Better promotion that way.

When races are not available, try next year to sell ads with the Appalachian League franchises- perhaps an "Appy League Game of the Day" the way high school basketball is done on the stations.

I would expect once fall comes around that WXSM would pass WFHG for the simple reason their signal is going to be stronger in the night and the NASCAR season will wind down.

As far as talk shows go, at the risk of sounding presumptous, Fan1 has an idea. What do you think I've been auditioning for on this board.

The fact of the matter is the success of this board comes about because I am willing to say what everybody is thinking but nobody is saying.

I can bring that whereever.

Ratings are out and WXSM has gained a little. I'm sure when high school football season begins, they will gain a little more. (just like Pitt said)

Saw the ratings. It will be interesting to see how the talk wars fare. WJCW almost always wins- they have the better programming especially now with the demise of Imus and the move of Sean Hannity.

But with the presidential elections I expect both WJCW and WFHG to improve.

Also, what happened to The Sports Fox? It was tied with WXSM in the one trend and then doesn't even show up in the book at the end of the day.

Now, will that cut into sports talk? I don't know. I expect WXSM to do better than a 1.0 for sure.

One thing I do not get is what WKOS is doing. They have this format nobody listens to.

What I suggest is that it change to country and go after WXBQ.

It may not beat it, but it could significantly wound it to the point the enormous ratings WXBQ does get would be halved.

Much of WXBQ's revenue could be had by simply offering more competitive rates.

What would then probably happen is a cut in the news department. Got to save some coin somewhere.

With that cut made, WJCW and WFHG's news departments are equalized, thus making WJCW a much stronger choice for the news/talk market.

Remember, in the days when there were more than one country music station in the market (US 99, for instance), it was WQUT that reigned supreme in the ratings wars. This was in the late '80s, but I believe it could happen again if WXBQ had some competition.

WXBQ is very lucky WMEV is not officially in this market.

RE: Is WXSM failing?
There was a time that WQUT was a really good rock station. If someone is to do another country station in the market, they don't need to do more of the same, but offer a "REAL" country music format, i.e. less of the watered down 80's classic rock with a pedal steel, and more country music. When WGOC was on 640 they had great numbers. Imagine that format getting a little bit of a tweak to it, on an FM station.

Lover- I actually don't think being on AM or FM meant a lot to the success of WGOC.

Sure, being on 640 instead of 1320 means a lot, but 640 instead of 103.7 or wherever on your FM dial- no.

The reason being is because most of the classic country audience LIKES the station on AM. It is a reminder of their youth when they would listen to AM for music and the sound is how they remember the songs coming out of their speakers.

640 has the best AM signal in the market.

There are ways AM can survive. News/Talk/Sports, for instance.

We come to expect talk on AM, a major reason why WJCW does better than WFHG (or why in Pittsburgh KDKA does better than News/Talk 104.7 despite the fact the FM station has taken Rush Limbaugh and the Pirates from KDKA).

I'm not necessarily talking about Classic Country, check out the "Merle FM" station in Knoxville. It's a really good country station with a HORRIBLE transmitter. Talk radio can exist on either dial, but it's niche definitely is on the A.M. dial.
