Football is now virtually assured................
As I said a few months ago, it's a matter of when, not if. That is now essentially assured. The back-to-back columns Trey wrote this weekend, along with Brian Smith's most recent "scathing" column, along with the unanimous resolution in the Tennessee legislature, along with the mayors' support, along with the principled committment of Rusty Crowe (and others), along with a slow but surely rising tide of discontent with the abscense of football, have now combined to achieve a "tipping point". This is my opinion, of course, but it is informed, and it is the result of reading a lot of tea leaves over the years.
Even if wayne andrews were named the new president, he couldn't stand in the way. (Although he probably would still not be a friend.) The TBR, even though they of course will make no pronouncement indicating such, will take the athletic administrative attitude of applicants into account because of the pervasive legislative climate, and because the local legislators, press, and officials will make them weigh and consider it. It can no longer be escaped from, or trivialized. Of very key import here is the changing of the attitude at the AM Authority, where non-Hodge sportswriters have become more emboldened, in part because Brian Smith did it and didn't get canned, and in part because they finally realized that mullins and white were ultimately more bark than bite in terms of implicit fear of retribution for negative stories. Although Trey's Sunday column was mostly quotes from attendees at the BFFF, it was written and allowed to speak as if it were an editorial. The tide has finally, but surely and relentlessly begun to come in, and there is no turning back for whoever is the new president. Even stanton, although he couches his words carefully, has thrown in the towel.

The renewed contract for andrews would not keep him from returning if that's what he wanted to do and that's what "the powers that be" wanted to have happen. I have no recent insight into andrews' intentions (and proud of it, I guess), and he will be given serious consideration if he throws his hat in the ring, but the time is now past when his whispering into paulie's ear for those years will not come back to haunt him at least to some extent.
Mark my words, whoever the new president is, he/she will be tasked with re-instituting football, at least in some form or fashion, and my money is on it coming back as Div. 1-AA, although that is too nebulous to call with any certainty right now.

Although there is MUCH work to be done, 'victory' is now within grasp, and I think by this time next year, or shortly thereafter, the in-house groundwork will be beginning to take shape, whether or not a formal announcement has been made. Congratulations, Jerry (Doc) - and all the others who have worked so diligently for this. Special thanks to Rusty. Enough stakeholders have now spoken out, and even more will be doing so as time goes on. Again, this is only my opinion, but I believe in retrospect, this time frame will prove to have been the tipping point, with stanton's resignation announcement partly causing, and partly being caused *by*, this confluence of factors. (How's that for a Zen-like statement?)

So sayeth thedoctor all the above. Good work all of you.

And with that, thedoctor shall probably shrink back into the shadows......

Yeah, you said that five years ago too.

I hope you're right. But there is a little problem that I see.

ETSU has ALWAYS done things the way they want to. That's why there is a divide between school and city.

Now's not the time to start proclaiming FOOTBALL WILL BE BACK! YAY!

You're forgetting just how bad of a sports town this is.

There is plenty of work to be done.

Agreed Pitt. There has got to be some PRIVATE FINANCIAL SUPPORT, and more than just the yardsale "I gave my 20 dollars" mentality that infects the enire region. It's going to take some serious wallet opening, which right now could be tough, especially within the cities. The bottom line is all this support and resolutions can be passed, but what are these local governments going to do to help? A resolution is a piece of paper, it won't pay for the bricks and mortar for a new stadium.

I really hope that "someone" understands that there is a desperate need for new blood across the board at etsu. Time and time again, when a university hires from within, you get the same old song and dance... we can look to our peer institutions to see that taking a bold step with leadership results in amazing progress and that staying in the circle of the good old boys (or the lone good old gal) just breeds the lax attitude that we've seen for so long at etsu.

It's time for ALL of those good servants to RETIRE and enjoy life and time for people with good intentions and ideas to take the helm. Time to stop the inbreeding that etsu has enjoyed for so long and let some new blood in....

One name that popped up recently is Dr. Manahan... he's interviewed for Presidential posts in the past few years and he's someone from the internal ranks that may have just been biding his time to acend to a higher level... I wouldn't rule him out until we hear otherwise... Not sure how I feel about that if it turns out to be the only alternative internally...

It's going to be an interesting few months and we definitely need to see what each one of us can do to help the Foundation's efforts. I'm sure there are letters to write and people we can call to let them know that it's not just about football but about the survival of the athletic department and image of our school.

I hope so doc, I hope so. But I'll believe it when I see the team running through the smoke.

Buclover, the money IS there, it's just being used to elevate all the other sports at ETSU as we've mentioned time and time again. If they would start doing things like the other successful programs that are surrounding them, things would come together quickly. You are basically right though, there does have to be much more financial support from the community than there was before - and we've demonstrated it's there with almost $400,000 in under 3 months.

Doctor, I hope you're right. I hope you have enough inside information that you can make such bold statements accurately. I can see the writing on the wall, but I'm glad to hear you think it's more of a certainty.
