Ok I get it, since both of these young expressed interest in BYU through family members... BYU should tell them that they are sorry but we can not offer you a scholarship because that would make BYU look hypocritical.
Utah fans claim Bronco has said he will not recruit missionaries, yet they can find any quote that says that. IMO, they taking something that Bronco said in 2006 and twisting it to suite their own purpose. Here is what he said to a media member that asked about the 3 players (Brandon Bradley from Louisville, Max Hall from Arizona St, and Tom Sorensen from Vanderbilt) that transfered from other schools to BYU in the 2006 class. Here is what he said;
Quote:"As they came to us, they came of their own regard. We will not recruit players while they are on their missions. That's not our policy. But when they do contact us, we'll certainly listen."
Funny thing is in 2006 this was not an issue, IMO because BYU when 6-6 in 2005. I don't remember the Utes saying word one about those 3 transfers in 2006, I don't remember Louisville, Arizona St, or Vanderbilt complaining. It's just like BYU's players ages, when BYU is average it's never brought up, on good season it seems to be an issue.
It's not like Bronco is sending a bunch of letters, e-mails, text-messages (missionaries can not have cell phones on their missions by the way), or send coaches out to see the players. All has done is tell the interested player BYU is offering them a scholarship if they want it.
Another thing, as far as I know BYU is the only school in the Nation that has any type of policy about recruiting missionaries... Yet heaven forbid if a missionary would ever want to transfer to BYU then he is called a hypocrite even if he only offers the missionary a scholarship, because now he is recruiting the missionary now.
In March the rumor was going around that Riley Nelson would not be returning to Utah St and wanted to transfer to BYU (also in February 2007 before he left on his mission there was a rumor of the same thing). Yet from what I gather it only took Riley a week or so to decide he wanted to accept BYU's scholarship offer. It has been reported that before he offered Riley he called and talked to Utah St Head Coach to tell him BYU was going to offer Riley a scholarship. Also the Utah fans seem to be upset because BYU offered Riley a scholarship with almost a year left on his mission (he gets off his mission in beginning of March 2009). If you are Utah St head coach would you rather know now or in January of 2009 were you would have to rush to find the best QB recruit you could find at such a late date in the recruiting game. Personally I would rather start beating the brush now to find the best QB recruit to take Riley's spot on the roster for 2009.
