Much to do about Riley Nelson...
Who is Riley Nelson? Riley 6' 1" 205 QB recruit in 2006 who took a scholarship to play football at Utah St. During his Sr season at Logan High School in Logan, Utah (were Utah St is located) had a breakout year; Passing 4,041 yards and 53 TD's; Rushing 1,774 yards and 31 TD's... Totaling 5,815 yards and 84 TD's and the Utah 3A state Championship on the season. He was named a Parade All-American, Gatorade Utah Football Player of the Year, and Deseret Morning Newses Mr. Football for the state of Utah. Truly he had a freaky Sr season in 3A football (5A is the largest) in Utah, but since he only had his breakout year in his Sr year and only received 1 D1 offer (Utah St) he was only rated 1 star by Scout.com and Rivals gave him 2 stars as a DB.
Family-- His father played football for Utah St and grandfather (Rod Tueller) was a Utah St head mens basketball coach who later became Utah St's athletics director.
His True Freshman year at Utah St-- He ended up playing in 8 games, in the 6th game of the year Riley got his first start against Fresno St. Utah St ended up upsetting Fresno St 13-12 for their only win of the year. In his 2nd start against San Jose St Riley set a Utah St record completing 87.5% of his passes (21 of 24, 145 yards, and 2 TD's). Utah St came up short in the game 14-21... Anyway at the end of the season Riley led Utah St in passing with 77-139-925 yards, 6 TD's, 7 Int's, and 2nd on the team in rushing 79-290 yards. Leon Jackson, III started the other 6 games, 73-150-694 yards, 3 TD's, 7 Int's, and rush was 56-105 yards.
After playing the 2006 season as a true freshman Riley left Utah St to serve a 2 year Mormon Mission (Barcelona, Spain).

Anyway Monday it was announced that he would be transferring to BYU.

Now to me it didn't seem like that big of a deal, but guess who was yelling foul the loudest? That would be Utah fans, not Utah St fans...

Here is the thing, LDS missionaries are recruited all the time by other schools... Utah got formed BYU player Isley Filiaga just last year, when he returned from his mission he transfered to Utah. BYU lost Ben Olson to UCLA, Brock Stratton and Bristol Olomua both transfered to Texas Tech to name a few.
When Fui Vakapuna was on his mission (Carlsbad, California), he and his companion were invited to a members house. When the missionaries arrived who was setting in the members living room? None other than a Utah football coach... What is funny in the Utah fans say that Bronco say he would not recruit missionaries, yet they can not come up with a direct quote of that statement. Were I have read a number of times Bronco has said he will recruit missionaries if BYU is approached by a family member first. That happened a few years ago when Brandon Bradley mother contacted BYU about her son... Brandon ended up transferring from Louisville to BYU after his mission... Just to today it was reported that Malosi Te’o has contacted the UNLV coaches and told them he would be transferring to BYU after his mission. With Malosi it was his childhood dream to play for BYU and his cousin (who he is very close to) sign a LOI with BYU this February... But it looks like the Utes are already up in arms about this current event too...

It's does not take a rocket scientist to me both Riley's and Malosi parents have been following what's going on at BYU. Last Spring and Summer time BYU had 3 QB's transfers, Jacob Bower, Cade Cooper, and Sam Doman, BYU failed to sign the QB they offered in 2008 class, plus it looks like Jason Munns and James Lark will be going on missions this year. So there is a pretty good chance BYU could have a couple openings for a QB. Also there has been quite a few rumors out there of Riley not returning to Utah St and transferring to BYU (even before he left for his mission). It was know secret Riley was wanting BYU to offer him in 2006, instead BYU signed 3 other QB's that year (2 being return missionaries), Max Hall, Sam Doman, and James Lark.
In Malosi Te’o case as soon as Manase Tonga was thought to not be ineligibly (academic) Malosi father made contact with BYU about a newly open RB spot.

Ok I get it, since both of these young expressed interest in BYU through family members... BYU should tell them that they are sorry but we can not offer you a scholarship because that would make BYU look hypocritical.
Utah fans claim Bronco has said he will not recruit missionaries, yet they can find any quote that says that. IMO, they taking something that Bronco said in 2006 and twisting it to suite their own purpose. Here is what he said to a media member that asked about the 3 players (Brandon Bradley from Louisville, Max Hall from Arizona St, and Tom Sorensen from Vanderbilt) that transfered from other schools to BYU in the 2006 class. Here is what he said;
Quote:"As they came to us, they came of their own regard. We will not recruit players while they are on their missions. That's not our policy. But when they do contact us, we'll certainly listen."
Funny thing is in 2006 this was not an issue, IMO because BYU when 6-6 in 2005. I don't remember the Utes saying word one about those 3 transfers in 2006, I don't remember Louisville, Arizona St, or Vanderbilt complaining. It's just like BYU's players ages, when BYU is average it's never brought up, on good season it seems to be an issue.
It's not like Bronco is sending a bunch of letters, e-mails, text-messages (missionaries can not have cell phones on their missions by the way), or send coaches out to see the players. All has done is tell the interested player BYU is offering them a scholarship if they want it.
Another thing, as far as I know BYU is the only school in the Nation that has any type of policy about recruiting missionaries... Yet heaven forbid if a missionary would ever want to transfer to BYU then he is called a hypocrite even if he only offers the missionary a scholarship, because now he is recruiting the missionary now.
In March the rumor was going around that Riley Nelson would not be returning to Utah St and wanted to transfer to BYU (also in February 2007 before he left on his mission there was a rumor of the same thing). Yet from what I gather it only took Riley a week or so to decide he wanted to accept BYU's scholarship offer. It has been reported that before he offered Riley he called and talked to Utah St Head Coach to tell him BYU was going to offer Riley a scholarship. Also the Utah fans seem to be upset because BYU offered Riley a scholarship with almost a year left on his mission (he gets off his mission in beginning of March 2009). If you are Utah St head coach would you rather know now or in January of 2009 were you would have to rush to find the best QB recruit you could find at such a late date in the recruiting game. Personally I would rather start beating the brush now to find the best QB recruit to take Riley's spot on the roster for 2009.
