Congressman Paul Broun, MD, GA-R
This is my congressman. He's from Athens and is the 10th Congressional District of GA's representative. That district's main voting block is Columbia County, Ga, right outside of Augusta (Evans, Martinez, Appling)

Soldiers Say Porn Ban May Hurt Morale

My response to him on his website:

Quote:Dr. Broun, have you lost your mind? This new ban on magazines like Playboy for our troops is NOT why I voted for you. What are you trying to do, appeal to social conservatives? I am a conservative, but this is an idiotic stance to take. You served, did you not? I served as well and am now a defense contractor. We sent you there to handle the tough tasks of bringing financial responsibility to our government. Not idiotic stances that'll appease social conservatives so you can get re-elected. After voting for you, I was a little reserved and thinking you may try to move MCG to Athens. Then you started sending out letters telling everyone what you were doing. I was reassured. However, with this bill you're proposing, you just lost a vote. No, I'm not some porn addict, but this bill you're introducing is a waste of time and really hurts the morale of our troops.

Goodbye, former Congressman Broun.

This is Dr. Charlie Norwood's replacement. Sad excuse for a replacement.

This guy voted for the legalization for medicinal marijuana, but wants to ban playboy for our fighting men?

That is very disappointing. I thought he would be one of the rare allies of Ron Paul in the House.

Why would we make something illegal for our armed forces that ISN'T illegal for our average citizens? Surely, like any corporation, the Army can limit its use to "off-duty" periods... but c'mon.

Stupid, Stupid, Stupid.

They blame porn for the rise in sexual assaults on military bases (as opposed to simply the increased presence over the years of members of the opposite sex, plus the increased tension in combat).

Prohibition is a primary evil of government and major cause of most crime via drugs. Not only does our nation lock up over 800k people per year for nonviolent drug offences but it has FAILED to stop anything that it has sought to prohibit.....I advocate the legal purchase of booze, drugs and porno to anyone that is age 18...If you can die for your country, you should be able to do it...drunk,stoned and with a hand in your pants if you wish...as long as you do are not harming another person with your habits.05-stirthepot

Well damn, a politician that actually responds to an e-mail:

So your are blaming the rise in sexual assaults on the fact that there are more women around to assault. 01-wingedeagle I guess you feel the woman should just lay back and enjoy the ride as well.

I think a ban on porn for military personel is insane. Shoot if I am goind to take bullet for my country and I can't do this :rolltide:, then I should be able play with my bishop to pics of some pretty women.

The whole purpose of the government is to control the actions of its populace. You just have to figure what control you want the government to have and that you are willing to give up..

The purpose of the government is to protect the rights of its populace, not to control their actions. In some cases actions must be controlled to protect the rights, but that isn't its reason for being.

Government only protects the rights of the populace, that they allow the populace to have. As you have seen lately the government is able to take away rights for "national interests".

unless he's banning the internet he's not banning porn for troops. apparently clinton signed a law banning the sale of penthouse on bases.....

anyway, historical footnote. General George Washington did this, well the equivalent and what our culture would consider even more extreme.

Quote:The General most earnestly requires, and expects, a due observance of those articles of war, established for the Government of the army, which forbid profane cursing, swearing and drunkeness; And in like manner requires and expects, of all Officers, and Soldiers, not engaged on actual duty, a punctual attendance on divine Service, to implore the blessings of heaven upon the means used for our safety and defence.

July 4, 1775

interesting, there is a new book out on "George Washington and Leadership" that sounds interesting.

My problem here is this should be more of a CinC decision, not a lowly congressman.

Dude, comment one and comment two are completely unrelated. Why you choose to mix them is more 05-nono or 01-wingedeagle than MY comments.

The last time we were in serious prolonged combat with our soldiers under this kind of stress was Vietnam. The number of Women "in action" was virtually nil. PEOPLE under stress need relief... and yes, sex is a stress reducer. I doubt prostitution is a big business in the middle east, but what do I know. It CERTAINLY was in SouthEast Asia in the 60's and 70's. Yes... more women PRESENT means by simple math that the probability of them being assaulted is increased. This comment has NOTHING to do with their actions... it is simple math.

How many women are assaulted in all-male prisons versus the USAF Academy?? Do you believe that prisoners are more respectful of women than Cadets?? Or is it a lack of opportunity at the prison that keeps those numbers down??

In order.... the likelihood of sexual assault of a woman happens...

Men under MORE stress with women present >
Men under LESS stress with women present >
No women present, regardless of the stress level.

So yes... put women there, and increase the stress, and you will get more assaults. The lack of porn may actually INCREASE the incidence as it removes one of the alternative sources of stress reduction.

Fo Shizzle.... obviously, if you are stoned on duty, you are less likely to perform your duties as a soldier proficiently, thus you ARE potentially causing injury to others... but other than that, I generally agree with your comment. Off-Duty soldiers can certainly drink beer.

I just saw where California is proposing a 25% tax on porn to alleviate their budget crisis.

Can I just go ahead and attest FIRST HAND (Don't even start to lie and say you've never done it) that, in combat, when a soldier thinks about a porno or porno magazine he looks at his first response isn't to rape someone, it's to beat off. As for military installations, ban'em on post, they can get'em off post. Ban'em on one of the kasernes in Germany and, trust me, they can get a HELLUVA lot worse on the strasse's, same with Korea. This is NOTHING but pandering to the social conservatives and I made it known in my initial e-mail. I am, however, surprised that he responded, especially when I asked him if he'd lost his mind. The entire thing is bull****, and GNiner, you're right, this should be a CinC decision.
