Scrushy aides detained after spotted near courthouse with guns

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Richard Scrushy's bodyguard and another person were detained by U.S. marshals Tuesday after security workers saw them outside the courthouse with guns as jurors acquitted the fired HealthSouth Corp. CEO in a massive fraud.

U.S. Marshal Marty Keely said Scrushy aide Jim Goodreau and another man were spotted outside the Hugo L. Black Courthouse after the verdict was returned. They were circling the building in a sport-utility vehicle with a shotgun that was visible from the outside, he said.

Security officials stopped the vehicle and found a pistol-grip shotgun and a handgun, Kelly said. Both men were briefly detained, but they were later allowed to leave with the weapons.

No charges were expected, he said. Keely said marshals were not initially aware Goodreau and the other man were part of Scrushy's entourage.
