Spring Football Game
April 19th, 1:00 pm at the new football stadium. Another intrasquad scrimmage like they did at Homecoming and at Sanford last fall.
Everybody going?
I'm guessing they'll bring in temporary bleachers??

RE: Spring Football Game
I drove past the stadium yesterday and they were having a scrimmage. There was a nice crowd standing around watching. Of course, THE spring game is this week.
I guess they'll set-up the temporary bleachers this week. I'm especially curious about field goals and extra points in the spring game. Doesn't look like they have nets behind the goal posts, yet. Will they have to block 421 during the attempts?!!

RE: Spring Football Game
Great day at the Creek!! I parked in Lot Y (for the first time in over 20 years) and it felt strange walking to a football game at Campbell!! They had a merchandise tent set-up as you walked-in and it looked like people were buying. Season tickets were being sold at an adjacent tent.
The five portable bleachers were full and the crowd was estimated at 1,400.
I took a camera...and two un-charged batteries. Sorry. There were plenty of pics taken there this afternoon, though.
The official final score was Defense 33-Offense 31. I tried to keep score and had the defense scoring only 23 (Offense winning 31-23). I missed 10 of the defense's 1st half points somehow....I didn't count forced punts if they had a 1st down during the drive, and that might have been the difference.
Still no nets behind the goal posts. The extra point after the first touchdown apppeared to go into Highway 421 and came mighty close to landing in the bed of a pickup going by!
Here is the game summary from the CU release (I plugged-in the player #s).....
The Campbell defense had strong first half in outscoring the offense 26-0. The team forced nine punts and two fumbles in the first stanza. Cornerback Jared Hart #27 led the CU defense on the afternoon with seven tackles, two forced fumbles and two pass breakups. Defensive lineman Charles Fiore #55, J.T. Cox #56 and Randel Herring #95 each recorded sacks in the overall strong defensive effort.
The offense, who wore orange jerseys, came out firing early in the third quarter in scoring 21 unanswered points. Ray Griffis #9 hauled in the first touchdown of the day on a 19-yard strike from Mike Stryffeler #8. John Newton #81 followed with the extra point to make the score 30-7.
The offense, as was the case in the offense vs. defense scrimmage, immediately got the ball back and quickly moved down the field. Carl Smith #28, who had a game-best 114 yards rushing on the afternoon, marched the Orange to the goal line and was on the verge of scoring when the ball was punched out by Hart #27 and recovered by wide receiver Kelvin Murphy #80 in the endzone to make the score 30-13. The ensuing extra point from Steven Miller #99 split the upright to draw the Orange team ever closer.
The offense with momentum clearly in their favor continued to put it on the quickly tiring defense. Earl Kemp #23 showed a great burst in busting a 52-yard run for touchdown to draw the Orange to within nine, 30-21, after the made extra point from Adam Willets #1. Kemp #23 did all his damage, 97 yards, on only three attempts.
As the fourth quarter began the offense drew to within six on the made 32-yard Newton #81 field goal. The defense then put together a three-point rally of its own on the interception from Christian Dixon #11 to increase the lead to 33-21. The offense had one more run in them before time expired on the 10-yard strike from Stryffeler #8 to Doug Huddleston #12. The Miller #99 extra point made the final score 33-31.
“I thought we came out and competed very well today, head coach Dale Steele commented. “I thought the defense played a little better in the first half, but the offense rallied and really put together a workman-like drive in the third quarter. I’m very pleased overall with today’s play and performance. There were several areas we wanted focus on to start the day and for the most part we did a pretty good job. While I thought our execution with lacking at times, I felt our effort and intensity was strong throughout and was even a bit better than I was expected on fumbles and turnover situations. I thought our alignment and sticking to our assignment was an area we saw a lot of good things. The defense did a nice job in sudden change situations. Our special teams are an area that is hard to simulate in a scrimmage like this, but it is an area that I’m looking to shore up going into our final two practices of the spring on Monday and Wednesday of next week. “
Coach Steele continued, “I was excited to see the player’s faces. This was really their first opportunity to see what a football-collegiate atmosphere was all about. We appreciate all the support we’ve gotten through this whole process and are especially grateful to all the fans that came out to see the game today.”
