Hate to say it, but this is what I was expecting to see. Not surprised at all. This was a trap game. Top 25 ranking. A week off. All of the pats on the back and media love all week. A sub- .500 team. Perfect storm.

That said. They WILL beat Miami. They WILL beat crAkron They WILL win the East !

RE: BGSU Game Thread
I figured out one thing that si bad with being in the top 25. When you lose you have to see the score on ESPN every 5 minutes. It eventually made me watch a hockey game I couldn't take it. Seven days off just isn't a good thing for this team. Don't know why but it appears to be more than coincidence.

Yea Flash, I agree. And I also think this could be a monkey off our back. I was hoping to win the next 6 games after Bracketbuster and roll into the tournament with a nice seed, but MAC teams don't handle Top 25 success well. (Anyone remember 1996, when we beat Top 25 EMU?) Now I just hope the team is solidly P.O.ed and turned on the kill switch. I predict a -at least- 6 game win streak ahead.

Hope your right man, hope your right, it all depends on matchups whether or not we'll get a "Dub in the Dance".

RE: BGSU Game Thread
Right, eliteeight02. It's good to get no lower than 4, and Kent clinched no lower than 3 (right?), but time will only tell what seed is actually the best for Kent to have. I well recall Kent losing at Akron to end the 2001 season, blowing the #1 seed, but it turned out for the best for Kent in terms of who they got to play. Paricularly, they avoided OU. Kent struggled with OU's Brandon Hunter that year, but by losing the #1 seed OU was in the other bracket, and lost to Miami at the buzzer in the semi's. Kent matched up better with Miami, and beat them the next night. So, what I'm saying is only time will tell what seed is best for Kent to have. It isn't always #1. I'm not saying I want Kent to lose to Akron and/or Miami; I'm just saying, in the words of the immortal Fats Waller, "One never knows, do one?"

RPI did not drop as much as I thought it would. We dropped to 35 and are still projected to win our last two games and climb to 27. Not bad but beating BGSU would have been a lot easier path.

K76, reading this thread I thought you might be interested in something I posted on our board regarding seeds and the tournament history. I dug into the MAC records for the data.

RE: BGSU Game Thread
Thanks, Bronco. 2001 was the year that Kent was better off being #2, as they were able to put off playing OU, the team they matched up the worst against, until the final, and OU didn't quite make the final. Clearly, though, the #1 seed wins more than half the time. Talking about seeding, it looks like being seeded at least #4 really matters more than ever, as the #5 through #8 seeds now have to play the first round at the Q, thereby losing the home court atvantage. Plus, they, along with #9 through#12 would have to win on four consecutive days now to win it all. Does anybody remember the year in the late 80's or '90 when the botton two teams had to play in the morning, with the winner playing again that same night! That sort of thing wasn't uncommon 50 years ago and more, but really odd in more modern times.

RE: BGSU Game Thread
I don't recall that year. Here is something else that might be of use for those interested.

Multiple Bid Years for the MAC

# = NCAA seeds

1975 - CMU, Ohio (no seeds reported - tournament only had 32 teams)

1985 - #12 Miami, #14 Ohio

1986 - #10 Miami, #14 Ball St.

1995 - #10 Miami, #14 Ball St.

1998 - #11 WMU, #13 EMU

1999 - #10 Miami, #11 Kent St.

I don't recall the 1975 season very well, as Kent was gawd-awful then, but to get 2 teams in a 32 team field is amazing. That is 1/16 of the field. That would be like getting four teams now.

On second thought, not quite as amazing. If memory serves me well, when the field was 32 there was a cap on the number of teams per conference, perhaps only two could go.

RE: BGSU Game Thread
1975 was the 1st year that more than one team from a conference could make the tournament. Up until then you had to win the conference, so if you had a strong conference like the ACC many great teams didn't even get into the tournament. You could be #2 in the country at say NC State but with UNC #1 you were out of luck, and that is why the NIT used to have some value.

RE: BGSU Game Thread
Right, Hammer. For years prior to that it was 25 teams with only the conference winner going, if that conference had an automatic bid, as did the MAC. I believe there were 16 automatic bids, and 9 at-large for Independents and winners of conferences without the automatic bid. The pairings were basically geographical. OU went to the Elite 8 once under that format, but it required one less win than Kent's trip did. The NIT was still a big deal then, and even earlier it was more prestigious than the NCAA tournament. The NIT for a while had 16 teams, and all games were at Madison Square Garden.
