RE: 46"1080p lcd or 50"720p plasma
Someone earlier touched on the light in the room where the TV will be....aside from all of the other factors, this is extremely important. Plasma has a glass front that is very reflective even if not in direct light. I have a 50" Panasonic plasma that I absolutely love, but if I had to do it over again, and all things being relatively equal, I would have gone LCD.

47" LG LCD 1080 we bought at Best Buy for a grand. Incredible picture once you get it hooked up to HD. We went with the LCD for the reduced weight. Hanging something off a wall scares me especially when it weighs and costs so damn much.

I've been scoping out tv's for the last 6 months waiting to make my move, and I just got a 2 month old, still under warranty 42" LG Plasma for $475 on Craigslist. You can easily save 25-50% if you don't mind that the tv doesn't come directly from a store. The tv I got had a receipt for $1,100 with it. Craigslist is the $hit.

I went with the 50" Panasonic plasma. I love it, but I've never compared the two.

I haven't read the whole thread. 1080P has over 2 million pixels. 720 has less than one million in the same size screen. There is absolutely no comparison. Add to that there is the difference of 60 hz vs 120 hz. That will cost you about 500 bucks. What I mean is that the hz (refresh rate) is twice as good on a 120. This is important if you like sports.

There is no free lunches. You get what you pay for.

Dude, I have a Samsung 46" LN-T4665F 1080p and it's the greatest thing on earth.

If you buy a LCD, Samsung or Sony are your two best options (If you have the $$ to spend). Vizio makes a GREAT budget LCD (I have one as my second HDTV).

Since you mentioned PS3...I saw at either Circuit City or Best Buy a package deal that was unfrickinbelievable. $1700 you got a 40" 1080 Sony LCD + PS3 + Sony Home Theater System. Keep checking the ads, they are bound to run a great deal like that again soon.

If you're going plasma route...Panasonic is the ONLY way to go. They are the king of Plasma makers. Buddy of mine has one and it's pretty sweet. And you can get them in 1080p nowadays.

Personally looking at a Panasonic Plasma.
Here is a good article on Plasma vs LCD.

RE: 46"1080p lcd or 50"720p plasma
Rule of thumb: Measure the distance from the screen to where you will normally sit to watch the TV. Multiply that number by 4.

12 ft x 4 = 48 inch screen

And definitely choose 1080 over 720.

Plasma vs LCD vs HDLP is a matter of personal preference.

I prefer HDLP but I bought a 1080p LCD projector. It was on ebay and it was an incredible price. 3 chips - one each for red, green, blue.

It's big and boxy, but it has an INCREDIBLE picture.

The rule of thumb is that 720p is best for anything under 40". the extra resolution you get in 1080p just isn't noticeable when the screen gets smaller. On the flip side, getting a bigger screen you would really tell the difference if you got 720p vs. 1080p

Also, a lot of content is only 1080i/720p right now. You'll only see 1080p on BluRay. Broadcast and cable can't handle the bandwidth needed.
