Official MAC Football Recruiting Thread
I'm tired of relying on incomplete, biased, and uninformed recruiting coverage from Scout and Rivals. Post your school's list of verballed recruits here. We need to combine the Scout and Rivals lists, plus ones that they both missed.

Here are all 22 of Akron's current verbals, courtesy of Captain Cangaroo from the Zips board (.pdf Warning). Scout and Rivals are a bit behind on their coverage for us, and I expect that is the case for all MAC schools. So let's all set the record straight.

RE: Official MAC Football Recruiting Thread
Buffalo's recruiting list has really been coming together lately. Over the last two days I've heard of 4 or 5 new commits. Anyways, here's the guys we have so far. (It may seem small, but keep in mind the amount we have been able to sign prior to National Signing day in the past)

Darius Willis QB/WR 6'2" 234lbs Aldine, Texas
Keith Hunt LB/DE 6'1" 225lbs Paterson, New Jersey
David Skrip OL 6'3" 284lbs Albion, New York
Brian Thorson OL 6'3" 274lbs Omaha, Nebraska
Dalonte Wallace LB/DE 6' 200lbs Greenbelt, Maryland
Dustin Tait LB 6'2" 225lbs Knoxville, Tennessee
Quentin Sims WR 6'4" 190lbs Colerain, Ohio
Steve Means LB/DE 6'4" 220lbs Buffalo, New York
Joel Wilson DT 6'3" 275lbs Garland, Texas

Not a huge list yet, but I like that Gill is leaving New York to find guys that fit his system.

I’m sure there’ll be plenty of changes to this list over the final two weeks. For now, here’s Temple. Based on Scout ratings, the 2008 class has 17 players nationally ranked at their position (to date), with 8 players ranked in the top 100 at their position (not counting Legree). There are six 3-star players – three from H.S., three from prep school and two from the JUCO ranks.

Verbals:
DE Josh Williams (Arizona Western JC) Yuma, AZ 6-2/259/4.63 ***
DT Shahid Paulhill Philadelphia, PA 6-4/274 **
OG Steve Caputo Kennett Square, PA 6-4/280 ***

Marcus Cooper could be a monster, I was really pissed UB couldn't nab him. I saw films of him on rivals, and he looks explosive (to say the least). I'm very very excited with the progress UB is making and the ranked recruits they're getting, but Temple is doing great things.

BG only has like 13 or 14 scholarships this year. And about half of those are going to offensive lineman since we have only picked up two true OL the last two years. Already have 4 OL commits and hoping Blaine Schafer will be the fifth. So not a lot of flash in this recruiting class for the Falcons.

Looks like another year of signing 25-30 guys for Temple. How many years in a row can you sign 30 guys (again over the 25 limit) and still be under the 85 total scholarship cap?

2007 - 30
2006 - 27
2005 - 29
2004 - 30
2003 - 29

That's 145 scholarships for the 5 year span and they're already at 23 again this year with more offers waiting.

To paraphrase a poster from one of our Temple boards, we have 22 verbals thus far. If everyone signs in two weeks, all qualify academically and all enroll in school, then Temple has 3 additional scholarships left to hand out.

The NCAA allows a school to give a maximum of 25 football scholarships to student athletes within a year.

Temple signed 32 players last year. Ultimately, some of those recruits were sent to prep school or junior college; others gray-shirted. Some didn't qualify academically, some quit even before enrolling; some got into trouble and were released from their scholarships. In the end, Temple finished within the 25 scholarship number.

We've been recruiting at the maximum number of scholarships the past few years due to the sins of the past coaching staff, which relied heavily on JUCO players with a high turnover rate. Next season we'll finally have a roster that meets full NCAA Division 1 scholarship levels.

Right, 25 a year but 85 total which even with the defections how can 85 and 145 be in the same ballpark? IS Temple recruiting that many kids that either don't get into the school or once there the coach dumps from the team?

I think you missed the point about all the ju-co players Temple has signed. Those guys are only there one or two years, so you can't go back and look at five years of singees as many of them are only at Temple for two years.

2003, 2004 and 2005 recruiting classes included a high number of JUCO players who were on the team for two years or less. In addition, a number of players chose to leave the team when the previous coaching staff was shown the door. This wrecked our depth - hence the reason Temple has started the most freshmen in Division 1 the past two years. Upperclassmen have been primarily walk-on guys. Our 2007 team had only ONE senior on scholarship.

We have 6 guys on our roster from the class of 2005. There are 4 on the roster from the class of 2004. That's 10 scholarship players remaining that were recruited before Coach Golden was hired.

Golden's first recruiting class in 2006 had zero JUCO players. His second in 2007 had three JUCO players. This year's class looks to have 3-4 JUCO signees.

We've been able to accommodate the full compliment of 25 new scholarship players each year. We'll sign 25-30 - some of these players (as with all college football programs) will never end up at the university. Ultimately, we'll fall within the 25 scholarship limit.

With three solid years of recruiting under our belts, next season we'll have significantly fewer scholarships.

RE: Official MAC Football Recruiting Thread
I understand back in 2003-2004 they signed alot of JUCO kids, all who should now be out of the program, but in the last 3 years alone they signed over 85 kids to LOIs that should still be in the system as well as the few seniors and 5th year seniors. How do they again have 25-30 scholarships to give and still get under that 85 total? Did 25+ players not make the grade and/or Golden run them out of the system already?

As I said before, we have 6 guys on our roster from the class of 2005. There are 4 on the roster from the class of 2004. That's 10 scholarship players remaining that were recruited before Coach Golden was hired. A number of players were run out of the program when Golden arrived; many couldn't hack it academically (due to increased academic standards put in place by the new coaching staff).

In addition, Temple was docked (I believe) 9 scholarships (can someone confirm the exact number?) by the NCAA due to poor academic performance under the previous coaching staff. Those scholarships have been returned due to improved academics.

Golden's first recruiting class in 2006 yielded 29 commits. Of those 29, 19 are still on the roster. Some of the 29 players didn't qualify academically; others dropped out; a few transferred after their freshman year.

Golden's second recruiting class had 26 commits. Of that 26, 18 remain on the roster. Again, some didn't qualify academically, while others never enrolled/left school.

Worth noting, 3 verbal commits to the class of 2008 were athletes from previous classes who went to prep school or junior college and re-committed to the program. A fourth target, 3-star DE Muhammad Wilkerson, was an original commit from the class of 2006.

Hope this clear things up.

tchaump: those last 3 you mention as being part of the class of 2006 ... do they count against this year's total?

I believe so, yes. It's my understanding that the three players in question (Jeffrey Howie, Jared Williams and Clem Johnson) were never enrolled in the university. Howie and Williams were originally class of '07 signees who went to prep school for a year; Johnson was a class of '06 signee who spent two years as a JUCO. All three should count against scholarship numbers for the class of 2008.

If I'm wrong, someone please correct me - thanks!

In 2005 Temple signed 29, only 7 of which were JUCOs, so 16 kids didn't make it? In 2004 31 kids signed, 16 JUCOS, so another 11 kids got away? Wow, 27 kids in those 2 years with another 10 in 2006, and 12 more in 2007. I know every class for every school has a couple kids that don't make it, but 46 kids (49 kids minus the 3 that will return makes) in 4 years seems a bit alarming.

Regarding the 2004 and 2005 recruits - change in coaching staff, increase in academic standards, regime change...it's not so alarming to me. It actually seems pretty plausible (you have no idea how far standards slipped under the last coaching staff - I'm glad most of those players left).

Those in the 2004 class signed on to play Big East football - when Temple was expelled from the conference, its not surprising that a number of these players left. In 2005, the coaching staff was recruiting for a team without a conference playing an independent schedule - I imagine they took on some "risky" players academically to field a team.

With regard to the 2006/07 recruiting classes - every school has players who sign their LOI and never make it to school. The majority of those players who enrolled in the university have remained at the university. These classes need to be judged by the number of enrolled students who graduate, not the number who signed their LOI.

Word is that WR Marcus Cooper has de-committed from Temple and has committed to Akron. It's unconfirmed at this point, so stay tuned.

So much for laying off after a kid gives his verbal and is only waiting for the signing period to come. I think it's bush league when the BCS schools swoop in and steal one away but when it's another MAC school the sting is worse.
