RE: Are we heading for another 1929????
You know the drill, Chipfan. The leadership doesn't seem to grasp that when their day is beginning, you've already been at it for 12 hours.
If I'm in Japan and my director wants me on a 9:00 am EST conference call to discuss progress on some issue, that's 10:00 pm in Tokyo. You've usually spent the day running through train stations, sitting for hours on a train, half a day in meetings and plant audits, maybe caught a late dinner on the way back to the hotel and then jump on a 2 hour conference call to share current information. And that's EVERY night I'm there.
When I was in Europe in December I caught a 7:00 pm flight out of Detroit to Amsterdam, got in the next morning (their time). Naturally didn't sleep on the flight over. Caught a 12:00 noon flight to Rome, got in at 4:00 pm local time. Rented a car and drove across the Italian peninsula getting to the Adriatic side about 8:00 pm. Checked into my hotel at 9:00 pm (by now it's about 36 hours without sleep) and at 10:00 pm my boss wants me on a conference call to tell the leadership about some issues. Get to bed at midnight, up at 6:00 am to go to work at Italian plant.
I travel because I have to to do the job the right way. But you can see not to far down the road where it'll become too much to continue. Hope I can hang in there for two more years before I reach your point-GM Hybrids is important for the company and for the world eco-system. We need to go Green-and fast. Time is not on our side, IMO.

I think they get it, they don't care. One reason I work as a consultant, if they're going to ask me to work that way, I'm billing them for that behavior.

They keep on pushing until the machine breaks, DB. Then they know they've found the limit and back off a notch or two.

Yep, see it all the time. Sat in on those board meetings when they're upgrading/implementing their ERP systems, they talk about the workload on their existing work force and how much they can push them, that attitude is there, they really don't care, it's about how much they can get away with, but it gets delivered with a smooth talking East Coast Harvard twang and disarming smugness.

Ain't it the truth? If we could use the $ 400 Billion Dumbo spent on his war in the last couple of years to reduce the deficit where would our stock market be today????
The best thing we could do for our nations economy is revoke his Passport while he's visiting the Saudi Royal Family.
