RE: Mercer @ Kennesaw 1/5/08
OK so I just saw the box score and here's what jumped out at me:
Wooten: 1-8 from 3 point land ...... and you know where that 1 came from! insane!
Jacobs: Ok this could be a mistake, but ESPN claims he had 18 boards. I'm not contesting that, but they say 14 of them were offensive boards. is that right??

RE: Mercer @ Kennesaw 1/5/08
I had to question the Mercer coaching also. Early in the game, Mercer was Killing us inside ... and then he went away from that!!
Florence taking 18-20 shots a game and shooting 30 percent is a mystery to me too. If I coach against him, I double him in the halfcourt and take the ball out of his hands, especially when his shot was on like it was early.
I think the difference was Mercer made their freethrows and we didn't. And we had a chance to go up late but we missed the bunny in close.
And obviously that second or third shot at the end killed us too.

RE: Mercer @ Kennesaw 1/5/08
Remembering the game from last night... what a crazy steal that was at the end of the game to get the ball back for KSU. If I'm Mercer, how do I let the ball out of my palm with 11 seconds to go let alone let the other team get it on a chance when I can run out the game clock. Oh well, all for not.
Free throws are the obvious culprit. This is more like the KSU I've watched for the past 4 years... not exactly what I've seen opening this season.

I don't think the the posters asking about why Mercer didn't go back inside were watching the game too closely. Mercer was getting the ball inside, it is just that Kennesaw started doing an excellent job of staying inbetween the Mercer big men and the basket. This caused them to usually pass the ball out. Early on Pfohl and Dolan were able to drop step their way to the basket, and get good shots...Kennesaw really stepped up their interior defense and made it tough on the Mercer frontcourt.
Just like Mercer did a good job of hounding Ronell and forcing him to shoot contested shots all night long, Kennesaw did a pretty good job of making the Mercer interior players take tough shots after the inital 5-10 minutes.

It will be an interesting game when we play in Macon... I think it's the last game of the season... to see how our teams develop over the course of the year.

Still can't get over that game... That could have jumpstarted our conference play. Even still, it shows we can hang with our conference.
Stegall missing two or three layups underneath the basket... a handful of missed FT's at the end of the game when they were REALLY important. Opportunities thrown away.
Wooten for THREE!!!!!!!!!! 1-8 for threes... wow, maybe he should just back up to midcourt the other 7 times.

Like I said, Kennesaw had a lot of opportunities that they threw away, but if you remember back to even last year. Mercer's big men dominated us inside on the boards and in the paint. Saturday, our big men held their own. We are starting to come together as a program, and our team played really hard this Saturday. Sometimes it takes a game like that to create belief...hopefully it will. A win vs. Jacksonville would go a long way for this team. It will be tough, but I think we can do it.

We'll see Thursday. I'm hoping for a "W". Jax is 2-0 in ASun beating FGCU and Stetson (3 OT!!!). 5-8 overall... should be a good game.

RE: Mercer @ Kennesaw 1/5/08
I was just excited to see that we have not taken a step back as a program. That might sound crazy to say considering that we are in the midst of our worst start as a Division I program, but the level of talent on our team has never been higher. We are continuing to grow. Consider our incoming recruiting class combined with players like Tanner, Mitchell (an older wiser Tanner), McConnell, JMac, John Allison (who is going to be a stud) and even Whipple and Keith to an extent (although they both need to work on their games).
We are going to be good very soon. Hopefully this year's team can turn the corner and put together a conference season, but either way, I think the future is bright.

It will be interesting to see how KSU does without Wooten. If anything he's always fun to watch, even when he's 1-8 from the 3.

I think that is a good point. Wooten sure is an exciting player, and is an emotional center for this year's team.

RE: Mercer @ Kennesaw 1/5/08
So Kennesaw Basketball, how do we get Keith and Whipple on track? What is the plan????
We need them! Keith's athletic ability and Whipple's jumping ability consistently with some basketball IQ (Whipple taking charges and a midrange game; Keith not taking any plays off on offense or defense and both shooting 70% from the freethrow line) would be tremendous.

RE: Mercer @ Kennesaw 1/5/08
Well, we aren't the coaches - so I am not sure what they are looking at in practice. Both players have had their opportunities in game situations and both have been inconsistent. Whipple was the beneficiary of some questionable charging calls in the Mercer game. The refs got charge happy on both sides on the ball. But it looks as though Whipple has a spot as an energy guy off the bench for now. I am not sure about Keonte. Obviously he did not play this last game, but that doesn't mean he is out of the picture.
Ingle might have been sending a message to Keith, but I wouldn't count on it. It was probably more likely that what we had was working, and why screw around with the rotation during probably our most cohesive game of the season. Keonte is a great talent, but I haven't seen much of a difference between freshman Keonte and sophomore Keonte. He is going to have to figure out a way to improve some of his weaknesses...free throw shooting, 1 on 1 defense without fouling, and his decision making seem to be the main core of it. Remember that Keonte is only a sophomore, and is a young sophomore at that, so he still has a lot of time to get better.
I would guess that the coaching staff has not given up on either of these young players, and I don't plan on it either - but we have to be realistic. Not every player develops at the same rate. Both of these players might take another year before they are where they need to be to contribute on the floor on a CONSISTENT basis.
