Seriously though, if only one of them were a Division I (FBS) school then the attendance and fan support would most like be the best in the MAC. The schools are just too close together and split the fanbase up too much.

Agree on the first statement, it IS smart of BG. How many OSU fans have friends or family that went to BGSU. A fair number (albeit maybe not many... but a few) might say "Gee I didn't know BG was playing the day before...."

Disagree on the second, NC State, Duke and UNC are all closer in proximity than Toledo and BG. Yet, NC State and UNC average around 50,000 and Duke around 25,000 So, it is possible to have respectable attendance figures and still be geographically close to another university.

UT,BG,and UM are all within about a hour of another and
draw about 150,000.

What some people fail to understand is that there are a number of OSU fans staying in Biloxi and Mobile, because there is still a lack of motel/hotel rooms in New Orleans, and others are just flying into Mobile because it is cheaper than flying into New Orleans. As long as they are there, the GMAC Bowl is a great form of entertainment. And you can say what you wnat, but there are many MAC school fans that are also OSU fans and vice versa. A football fan is a football fan. I know there have already beeen some OSU fans on AZZ saying that they are doing both games.04-cheers

But they play on a more national stage and pull from the entire area. We pull what we can from the smaller Toledo and BG area. We don't even pull half of the area though because of big brothers Michigan and Ohio State. NC State, UNC, and Duke do not have two big brothers that have been the biggest things in their states for 100 years and average over 100K per game.

Plus it should also be noted that much of the East coast is very highly populated compared to Northwest Ohio so there are more people in the UNC, NC State, and Duke area. There are rows and rows of townhouses and houses right up against each other on the East coast. Traffic is an alarming issue because of all of the people, despite having many more highways and many more lanes on the highways than there is in Northwest Ohio.

You just can't compare the NC State, UNC, and Duke situation to what UT/BG is.

Kent and Akron have it bad because you throw in YSU too. If one school had the whole Canton, Akron and Youngstown metro areas to advertise and market, it might have a better chance to compete.

I like this idea. Believe it or not, not every OSU fan is a relative of Satan's.

smells of desperation on BG's part to me.

This was posted by an OSU fan on the BG board this evening:

Hey guys, Buckeye fan here.

Myself and 5 others will also be attending the BGSU game while we're down there. I also know of 3 other groups of Buckeye fans who will be buying tickets to the game to support our Ohio brothers.

I am a big fan of football and love to see Ohio teams do well and will be there supporting BGSU. Good luck in the game!

It's a far cry from "begging". As others have mentioned, it's simply smart business. OSU fans will be in town anyway, so why not give them the heads up? One OSU fan posted on AZZ.com that he is going to the GMAC with a group and that he knows of some other groups that are doing the same.

At least it will give the Buckeye fans a chance to see a team from Ohio that might win a Bowl Game.

I know it is hard to imagine for Ohio and Akron fans since they rarely get a bowl bid 03-wink, but going to any bowl game is an awesome experience whether you like any of the teams playing or not. I have attended many motor city bowl games and they have all been a great time.

I must also admit that the best one I saw (next to BG's comeback win over NU) was the Toledo win over Cincinnati in the Silverdome.

Chester was impressive in that one. I was in a hotel with mostly UC fans and they were in awe. They actually thought they would win handily.

BG is the only MAC team to play against a Big Ten team in the MCB so far. CMU needs to keep the slate perfect for the MAC.

As I mentioned in the other thread, this is pretty pathetic. People slam OSU left and right. Yet, they will beg for them to come to another school's bowl game. That's bush.

Plus in downtown Moblie the bars really don't close at 2am, like they do in Ohio. Trust me when i was there in 2005, i took full advantage of that. 04-cheers 04-cheers 04-cheers

I am going to lose sleep tonight knowing that I am not invited a BGSU football game.

CMU will be sending its fat punter (Craig Fischer) down to Mobile to attract interest.

I'm still waiting for someone to show me evidence of begging. And who, exactly, are the people who both slam OSU left and right and beg for them (them = OSU fans, I assume) to come to the BG bowl game?

Two facts in this thread that I find stunning:

1) That people actually agree with BUGS' desperate move; and

2) That people think a GMAC bowl bid is something to be jealous about.

Desperate move?

Not really. Smart thinking. The conference is hooked for X number of tickets whether or not BGSU sells its allotment. So if OSU fans want to spend their money on GMAC Bowl tickets, that is less money BGSU has to spend on tickets (which would come out of the bowl payout) and means a few extra bucks for conference members (if there is anything left after bowl expenses are paid).

And is the GMAC Bowl bid something to be jealous about? If you have been to Mobile for the game and festivities before, then you are probably jealous and wish your team was going because you remember the fun time the people of Mobile provided for your team and their fans. If you did not go, then you have absolutely no idea as to what you are missing and you could care less.

Enjoy your basketball game on ESPN2 this weekend.
