South Alabama President to recommend to Trustees to approve FB program
excerpt:

...South Alabama President Gordon Moulton said Thursday that he will ask trustees, when they meet next week, to launch an intercollegiate football program.

"At this point in time, I think the information that we've been able to gather ... is more than conclusive for me to say to trustees that I'm going to recommend this," Moulton said.

Trustee approval of the new program and its budget at the Dec. 6 meeting would start a process that could result in USA fielding an NCAA football team by 2009.

Dr. Steven Stokes, chairman pro tempore of the board, said he favors a new football program and believes other trustees feel the same.

"We haven't counted any real serious opposition or objections," Stokes said.

He added that an NCAA football team could help USA become a "national university."

"You can't put a price on the exposure that a football program gives to a university," Stokes said.

Moulton has estimated that a new football program would cost between $1 million and $1.5 million in its first year, with a budget growing to about $5 million by the program's fifth year.

The majority of that cost would be covered by a $200 to $300 annual increase in student fees...
