#24 Duke vs. UNC (volleyball)
DURHAM, N.C. -- Jourdan Norman connected on 10 kills and racked up a team-high six blocks to lead No. 24 Duke to a 3-0 (30-23, 30-20, 30-24) sweep over North Carolina Friday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium. With the win, Duke sweeps North Carolina for the second straight season and picks up half a point in the Carlyle Cup standings.

Norman’s 10 kills came on 12 errorless attacks for a career-high .833 hitting percentage. For the fifth time this season, the junior middle blocker did not commit a single attacking error while contributing at least five kills in a match. Norman ranks third in the ACC with a .404 hitting percentage on the season, while also ranking among the top-five in the conference with 140 blocks for a 1.36 blocks per game average.

Norman’s efforts led Duke (21-6, 16-3 ACC) to a .295 hitting percentage with three players, including Norman, Sue Carls and senior setter Ali Hausfeld, turning in marks over .600. Carls turned in seven kills on 11 errorless attacks, while Hausfeld finished 6-of-8 attacking and picked up a double-double with 40 assists and 10 digs. Senior middle blocker Carrie DeMange also joined Hausfeld with a double-double of her own on 10 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Rachael Moss also reached double figures with 12 kills.

The Blue Devils were also effective in the serving game, as the team recorded seven service aces, three of which came from junior Aana Wherry. Wherry stepped up offensively in the match and contributed seven kills and two blocks in addition to her aces.

Duke clicked on all cylinders against North Carolina (15-4, 11-9 ACC) and limited the Tar Heels to a .082 hitting percentage, including a .049 mark in game three. The Blue Devils recorded 11 total blocks and outdug the Tar Heels 60 to 48, with senior libero Jenny Shull leading the way with 17 digs. Duke limited North Carolina offensive leader Lauren Prussing to seven kills to tie Heather Brooks for the team lead. Brooks and Christine Vaughen were the only Tar Heels to finish with hitting percentages over .150, with Vaughen’s .250 clip on 4-of-8 attacking leading the team.

DeMange came out swinging in game one for the Blue Devils and racked up five kills, including four on the team’s first eight points, to lead Duke to a 30-23 win in the opener. DeMange’s early production allowed Duke to hang with the Tar Heels until four unanswered points by the Blue Devils broke a 13-13 deadlock. Duke maintained at least a three-point lead for the remainder of the match and sealed the win with a 6-3 game-ending run, highlighted by a pair of kills by Norman and singles from Moss, Carls and Wherry.

Duke nearly doubled its offensive production in game two after putting together a .414 clip and six blocks on the way to a 30-20 victory. The Blue Devils committed just four attack errors in the second frame, thanks to Norman, Hausfeld and Moss, who teamed up for a 10-of-18 attacking performance. Norman was a perfect 5-for-5 attacking, while Hausfeld did the same with her three attempts. Duke and North Carolina battled to another 13-13 tie, only to lock up again at 16-16 after Vaughen erased a two-point deficit with a pair of back-to-back kills for the Tar Heels. A service error by North Carolina on the next play would give Duke all the opportunity it needed, however, as the Blue Devils began a 7-1 run to go ahead by six points at 23-17. A short North Carolina rally was quickly extinguished by back-to-back kills from Moss and a pair of blocks from Hausfeld and DeMange before Norman hammered the game-clincher.

Duke spread the offense around in game three, as six Blue Devils recorded multiple kills en route to a 30-24 match-clinching game three victory. Duke jumped out to a commanding lead, leading by as much as 12 points at 23-11. The Tar heels would not go quietly, however, as they rattled off a 9-3 run to cut the deficit to six points at 26-20. North Carolina fought back to within four points at 27-23, but Wherry snuffed the late rally with a kill that was quickly followed by another from DeMange and a match-point ace from the senior middle blocker.

The Blue Devils will return to Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 17 for their home finale against N.C. State at 7 p.m. As part of Duke’s “Senior Night” festivities, the team will honor its senior class of Shelley Capito, DeMange, Hausfeld and Shull with a special pre-match ceremony.
