RE: does BE conf record matter for secondary bowls?
As far as I know, College Card, just about every current bowl deal runs from 2006 through 2009. Obviously there are some long-running deals at the BCS level for which renewal is just a formality.
Something to keep in mind is that the ACC is absolutely desperate to get out of the Boise Bowl at all costs. There are rumors that they want to set up a second Atlanta Bowl against the Big Ten.
Of course the Big Ten already has seven bowls so that might be a shaky arrangement. Maybe the ACC could end up starting up their second Atlanta Bowl against the Sun Belt runner-up instead.
That leaves Boise open and no one really wanting to go there. So this is an opportunity for the Big East, WAC, Army, and Navy to work together on an arrangement that would benefit all of us.
Boise and Tampa would rotate Army and Navy every year. That gives the two service academies a chance to experience two different bowls in two very different locations against two leagues.
It could also be Hawaii instead of Boise if it ends up working out that way. The Poinsettia Bowl, from what I have been told, wants to go to a MWC against Pac-10 arrangement in the future.
Now the downside is what would happen if Army or Navy failed to become eligible in their intended year. Boise (Hawaii) and/or Tampa would just have to settle for whoever is leftover in that case.
While this is a possible negative, it is also an important step we need to take in order to avoid being blindsided, like in Charlotte last year. The WAC would probably love an idea like this anyway.
