Gov. Ben Cayetano has set Monday as a deadline for officials to determine whether FieldTurf can be installed in time for the first scheduled football game at Aloha Stadium next month.

Cayetano met with officials on Friday to get an update on the progress of replacing the field's surface.

The Stadium Authority on June 13 approved the installation of FieldTurf to replace the 3-year-old AstroTurf at the stadium and set an Aug. 2 deadline.

The first scheduled event at the stadium is the Father Bray Classic on Aug. 24. The University of Hawaii's football season opens on Aug. 31.

FieldTurf chief executive officer John Gilman, the Hawaii Tourism Authority and members of the Stadium Authority have spent much time since June 13 trying to attain the needed approvals and figuring out how much work needs to be done on the stadium floor prior to installation.

There were unforeseen delays in getting results from a coring sample, and new roadblocks have appeared, including a slew of required permits that FieldTurf officials were not immediately informed about, Gilman said.

``It took a bit of time, but we think we have everything now,'' Gilman said.

He would not comment on whether it is still possible to get the surface installed by Aug. 2. Cayetano and others are hoping for an extension to the deadline.

Gilman has said the turf can be laid down in about two weeks at a cost of $877,500. The Tourism Authority has agreed to pay $500,000. FieldTurf and the NFL agreed to contribute to the remaining costs.

Initial findings also indicated that more work may be needed on the stadium subsurface to prepare it for the installation of FieldTurf.

Costs had been pegged at $2 million to $3 million for that work, but more recent studies -- which will be discussed Monday -- indicate that not as much work may be needed on the subsurface, Gilman said.
