...in this classic game from last year. This is amazing. On November 10, 2001, San Jose State defeated Nevada 64-45. SJSU led only 10-6 after the 1st quarter, but at the half it was 38-25 Spartans. After 3 quarters, it was 57-39. Only 2 TDs in a defensive struggle in the 4th...Here is the game recap...
Marcus Arroyo threw a career-high five touchdown p***es to lead San Jose State to a 64-45 victory over Nevada on Saturday night as the teams set an NCAA record for total offense.
San Jose State (849) and Nevada (791) combined for 1,640 yards, eclipsing the previous record of 1,563 yards set by Houston and TCU on Nov. 3, 1990.
They also flew past the previous Western Athletic Conference mark of 777 offensive yards by Brigham Young against New Mexico on Oct. 15, 1983.
Edell Sheperd caught nine p***es, three for touchdowns, for a school-record 269 yards as the Spartans (3-3, 3-6) won for the third time in four games. Jarmar Julien ran for 165 yards and also scored three times.
Nate Burleson set a conference record for Nevada (2-4, 2-7) with 326 receiving yards on 12 catches.
Arroyo, who was benched the previous three games, threw for 476 yards (21-of-26) without an interception. He completed his first 11 p***es of the second half. Clint Carlson, who started the previous three games for the Spartans, broke his right thumb to open the way for Arroyo.
Chance Kretschmer, who scored three times, gained 177 of his game-high 190 yards in the first half to set a freshman single-season school record as Nevada (2-4, 2-7) lost for the fifth time in its last six games. David Neill threw for 474 yards (19-of-39) and a touchdown.
Burleson's 91-yard p*** reception set up Kretschmer's third touchdown, a 1-yard run with 5:47 left to play. The Wolf Pack then recovered an onside kick, but the Spartans batted away a fourth-down p*** on the San Jose State 5.
Arroyo's 78-yard scoring toss to Charles Pauley with 3:40 to play clinched it. Pauley finished with 201 yards receiving on seven catches.
After the Wolf Pack drew within a touchdown in the third quarter, San Jose State scored three consecutive times to take a 57-32 lead. Julien scored on a 14-yard run, Sheperd had a 32-yard TD catch and Tuati Wooden added a 29-yard scoring receptions to give the Spartans a 25-point advantage with 3:29 left in the quarter.
The teams scored on 11 of 14 first-half drives. One Nevada drive ended with an interception in the end zone, and the Wolf Pack punted once. A San Jose State drive was stopped by the end of the half.
Julien and Shepherd each scored twice in the second quarter for the Spartans as they took a 38-25 lead into intermission. Julien scored on a pair of 1-yard runs, while Shepherd caught two scoring p***es.
Shepherd caught a 38-yard p*** from Marcus Arroyo to give San Jose State a 17-6 with 14:43 left in the quarter, then added a 57-yarder from Pauley on a receiver option p***.
Arroyo also threw an 18-yard touchdown p*** to Wooden for the Spartans' first touchdown just over five minutes into the game. Nick Gilliam connected on a field goal of 27 yards.
The 38 points were the most by the Spartans in the first half since a 42-point outburst against Cal State Fullerton in 1992.
Nevada, which trailed by 19 points with 3:03 left in the first half, rallied to 38-32 early in the second half.
David Neill threw a pair of touchdown p***es of 30 yards to Mo Jones and 39 yards to Aaron Carter, the latter with 16 seconds left in the half. Damon Fine kicked field goals of 33 and 37 yards, and Kretschmer ran in from a yard out.
Nevada also scored on its first drive of the second half. Neill raced in from 16 yards out with 11:32 left in the third quarter. That touchdown was set up when Neill picked up a bad snap and raced 20 yards for a first down two plays earlier.
San Jose State's Deonce Whitaker returned two kickoffs for 54 yards in the first half to become the school's career kickoff return leader.
