WAC TV deal ends; ESPN talks continue

By Ferd Lewis
Advertiser Staff Writer

Contract negotiations between the Western Athletic Conference and ESPN on a new multi-year deal have gone into overtime.

The WAC's three-year deal with the cable network lapsed at the conclusion of the conference basketball tournament last month and ESPN's exclusive 30-day negotiating window has expired since then, officials said.

But Karl Benson, WAC commissioner, said both parties "have agreed to continue our talks and work toward a mutually beneficial resolution. I'm optimistic there is a deal there to be made."

The WAC keeps getting better and the games are drawing more national audiences. We deserve a better contract.

I know this is going to sound selfish, but it has been on my mind. How is it that we divide the tv money evenly amongst all schools, when there is consistently only three teams being televised during the football season (BSU, fresno & Hawaii)? It just seems strange that we will probably be on espn 4-5 times this year and get about 10,000 a game for it. I mean with that type of thinking we should be splitting ticket sale proceeds amongst all schools evenly. What is everyone elses thinking on this? 03-confused

Thats the point of this whole "Conference Shuffle" thats been going around. It didnt start because of "geographic fit", It all started because Miami felt the same way. And as Boise has had a good program for a few years now, that doesnt mean that they have always carried the WAC or Big West. The ideal conference is one that has geographic proximity, and stability (meaning teams that stay put, build rivalries, and each team will equal out and all have sucess over time)

Sometimes, you have to give to the league to keep it strong. The Broncos will not always be the best team in the WAC, so I am completely okay with revenue sharing of the TV revenue.

And I totally agree that we need a conference that makes sense geographically. I just hope UTEP stays in the WAC. Just say no to CUSA. Let them have UNT!!!
