if you count NIU's latest bowl appearance as anything more than a joke than you're kidding yourself.

they got into a bowl because of one player and no other reason
And who stuck by said player so he would come to NIU?

Is the name of the author given in the print version. If not, that is SUCH A COWARDLY thing to talk about something you know nothing about and not even sign your name to it. I cant believe Im upset about this, I already knew what they were about, but for some reason it still makes me upset. Bottom line is this paper should be not writing about athletics because 1)they have an agenda against it 2) they do not know anything about it. Id say its better to keep your trap shut given those 2 points. What a joke.
Hello constitution.

Freedom of the press.

Don't read it.

No one on this board can ever have any opinion that questions Joe don't you know that!!!

Even if he goes 5-50 the next 55 games, LOOK WHAT HE DID FOR THIS PROGRAM!!!!

I have never been on a board where EVERY comment that doesnt' agree 100% with the majority is lambasted by the all knowing All American posters.

If you question 1% of what Joe does you are anti-NIU - which is BS!

If it is an editorial, it is the stance of the paper, and, therefore, does not get a byline.

The editorial is just further confirmation, and this goes back to when I was in school (early 90's), that the NS is excellent ass wipe.

With the exception of McBob.

Could you wipe your ass on this piece as well?

Quotable:
** "This game here, this is a great, great win for us in the way it was done. Our defense I thought came up huge and that's something I think we really needed to get done." Western Michigan head coach Bill Cubit.
** "I didn't miss the opportunity to give our kids an English lesson on the word ‘redundant.' Today was pretty redundant. We just couldn't make a couple plays when we needed to. That's the story of the season." Northern Illinois head coach Joe Novak.
** "One for thirteen (third down conversions) is not acceptable and I need to start making those crucial throws in those situations." NIU QB Ryan Morris.

We have one of the top D's in the MAC.

So...Yes?

0 MAC Titles
Recruiting classes have gotten worse every year since 2004
Not a good in-game coach

I appreciate what he's done and how he restored the program, but it's right back to where it was when he took over.

Spot on, but for the "restored the program," part.

Of course, that idea is so entrenched in people's minds that its one of the unassailable myths of the Joe Novak era, thus it's unlikely anyone is liable to be cured of that illusion any time soon.

Didn't Joe recruit that player?

Wolfe essentially had no place else to go, so to credit Novak for recruiting him is misleading.

So to for Hurd, Sheldon, Fleck and Turner, the people responsible for Novak's succes at NIU.

RE: Northern Star: Novak Era Has Run Its Course
The NS article is poorly written, illogical and just plain silly in many ways, like so much the NS has to offer.

Be that as it may, the kid's got the right idea. The program has been trending downward since October of 2003, and sadly, it doesn't seem like we're anywhere close to bottoming out.

It's time for we Huskie fans to manifest some pride, and proclaim loud and clear that the plodding mediocrity (and worse) of the Joe Novak era is no longer acceptable.

It was evident that Judson wasn't the answer for hoops after a talented team quit on him during the 2003 season. It took three years after that to get rid of him.

How long will it take to move Novak out the door, what with this illusion that he "saved," the program?

Yep.

Novak having the sight to pick out these diamonds in the rough he should get no credit for.

You are correct.

Uh, no.

Can I mention once more this article could have appeared in Penn State newspaper a few seasons ago by simply substituting Paterno for Novak and Lions for Huskies.

Papa Joes I and II are quality coaches doing their jobs with considerable success overall - end o story.

Didnt PSU just wipe Wisky?

A few seasons ago PSU could not beat most teams on their schedule either.

Well, now, let's not exaggerate, newguy.

We are middle of the pack in MAC in total defense. Sixth out of 13.

That's not true looking online at the Star, every other opinion piece on the page right now has a author listed, this is the only one that doesn't. It is a weak move on the author's part. If I wrote into the star and submitted a letter, I have to submit my name or the letter won't be printed, but the writers and editors don't have to if they don't feel like it?

It's obvious why no name is listed, it's one of the sports reporters/editors and they have to still deal with Donna Turner and Coach Novak.

I don't have a problem with someone giving their opinion and even though I completely disagree with this column, the only real problems I have with this piece is the author not putting their name on it and making statements that are absurd, like coaches jumping ship because they saw the writing on the wall and got out. What isn't better about 2x the money at a BCS school? It's called ascending the corporate ladder. Got to move up to get anywhere.

What if Jim Phillips leaves tomorrow for lets say the Indiana Ad job, what did he see a sinking ship coming and bail?

Anyone can create drama and problems, it doesn't make you talented.

In a way Im glad this got printed. There were still a few people that still doubted that the NS despises NIU athletics. This at least cleared up any remaining doubt for the few that had it.
