Would have Tulsa, Rice and SMU still left the WAC for a CUSA without TCU?
And what if The WAC instead had added NMSU and Utah State to create a 12 team WAC?
Then the WAC would have looked like this:
East:
SMU
Rice
Tulsa
La Tech
UTEP
NMSU
West:
SJSU
Hawaii
Fresno
Utah State
Boise State
Nevada
Now that would be a STABLE Conference with reduced travel for all....except Hawaii!!!

That would have been a great conference with much saner travel. Although the bowl lineup would have needed to be addressed (and still needs it).
If the WAC had acted first and set up that lineup, who knows? TU, Rice and SMU may have stayed. Then again, the lure of a southern-based conference may have been too strong, even without TCU.
We'll never know.
