Interesting article on Boyd

Birth of a Superstar?

Oklahoma has had its fair share of NCAA basketball talent developed within its high school gymnasiums, but it has never been known as fertile recruiting grounds for collegiate programs. As time carries forward the youth in the state are leaving college coaching staffs drooling halfway through the AAU Summer basketball season.

The talk has always been about Oklahoma City (OK) Putnam City guard Xavier Henry since he set foot in the Putnam City gymnasium. To find the top player in the state for 2009 one may want to turn their gaze southerly towards Norman, Okla. guard Terrence Boyd. Not only is Boyd being talked about as the top prospect in the state, but some consider him to be one of the top five sophomores in the country.

"I've been in the gym all summer," Boyd said. "I practically live there. I'm either working out or shooting the ball. I try to shoot about 400 shots a day to get better from behind the perimeter. I've improved a whole lot over the past few months and I can tell a lot of people are realizing."

This early in the recruiting process colleges are not allowed to contact Boyd, but he has already taken a liking to a few schools including Illinois, Florida, Syracuse, UCONN, Maryland, Oklahoma, Kansas State, and Texas. Two schools are currently elevated above the rest.

"It's still real early but right now I like UCONN and K-State," he said. "I'm good friends with Rudy Gay and he wants me to follow in his footsteps there. We kinda grew up together in Maryland. Plus, I met coach Jim Calhoun once and I liked him a lot.

"At Kansas State my boy Michael Beasley committed there," he said. "I played ball with him on DC Assault and I became good friends with him and Nolan Smith. Beasley and I, we're really, really tight. That's my man."

Being a local player the Oklahoma basketball program would love to keep a talent the level of Terrence Boyd within their own borders. What are the odds Oklahoma gets into the mix?

"Oklahoma is in great shape with me right now," he said. "Their coaches see eye-to-eye with me and any time I've ever gotten to talk to coach (Jeff Capel) he's shot straight with me to help me become a better player. I've become real good friends with a lot of the players and I like them all.

"I think I would fit in there. It would make a great fit for me."

Boyd says there are certain reasons Oklahoma is not one of his top teams very early in hi high school career. He looks to have several of his questions answered throughout the 2006-07 season.

"I want to see how they play this year," he said. "I want to see how they handle adversity and what their character is like off the court. Time is going to tell whether they become one of my favorites or not, but my opinion of Oklahoma keeps getting better and better."

With the summer circuit beginning to take off Boyd has plans of further planting himself firmly as one of the top sophomores in the country.

"I'll be heading to ADIDAS Superstar Camp on Wednesday," he said. "I'm going to make sure everybody knows who I am by the time I leave there. After that I'm looking to play in some AAU tournaments, but I'm not sure if I'm going to play with Athlete's First or with my boys at DC Assault. I think it might be time for a change."

The rumored plan of Boyd heading to Oak Hill Academy has been tossed around for months now. He has heard the rumors, but he made it clear he plans to be winning state championships alongside 2009 Oklahoma commitment Kyle Hardrick for years to come.

"Mike (Beasley) and Nolan (Smith) were trying to get me to follow in their footsteps there," he said. "I told them I might so I think they started telling people I was going to, but I'm going to be in Oklahoma for a long time."

Things are just getting started for Boyd on a national scale, but it will not be long before he become a hot commodity among high-major basketball programs.
