BSU picked to win WAC football title; Avalos honored

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edition Date: 07-28-2004
RENO, Nev. — Two-time defending champion Boise State has been picked to win the 2004 Western Athletic Conference football championship, the league announced in its preseason poll Wednesday. The Broncos were 13-1 last year and have won 18 straight conference games dating back to 2001. BSU received 434 points and 23 first-place votes from media members around the WAC. The rest of the poll, released during the league's annual football meetings in Reno, included Fresno State (427 points, 20 first-place votes), Hawaii (384, three), Tulsa (312, one), Nevada (256), Rice (212), Louisiana Tech (199), UTEP (179), SMU (95) and San Jose State (87). The media also voted on preseason players of the year — BSU linebacker Andy Avalos and Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang. Avalos, a senior from Corona, Calif., was a first-team All-WAC selection last season after leading the Broncos in tackles for the second straight year. He finished with 112 stops including eight for a loss last season. BSU opens its season Sept. 4 against Idaho in Bronco Stadium.

Look for complete coverage of the WAC football meetings in The Idaho Statesman on Thursday.

Hard to argue with that. Boise and Fresno should be neck-and-neck. I'm not unhappy with the 4th place prediction - Hawaii is always solid.

Let's tee it up! 04-cheers

But #4 is a lot more respect than Tulsa has had for a long, long time.
Hope you can keep Coach Kragthorpe around for awhile!!!!
