2007- The Worst in our history.
I am sure the records will reveal...that 2007 will be the worst or close to the worst combined NI Football (2007) and Basketball (2006-7) record in our history.

I think Jim P is doing a wonderful job promoting our university and I hope to have him as long as we can have him, but surely, I wouldn't want to be the AD during such an "accomplishment".

On the glass half full side of things...I believe that our recent basketball recruit was one of the more touted recruits we have had in a few years and with respect to Mr. Jones (whether or not he actually lives up to any of the hype...)..he may be the biggest recruit in our FB history. So....perhaps our misery is shorter lived.

I have to say that you probably are wrong. I am not going to go look it up but I would guess we had worse teams during our football losing streak.

In 1998 NIU Football was 0-11 and NIU Men's Basketball was 6-20. Combined for a 6-31 record, worse in history.

I have no prediction for the football team but, the Men's basketball team MIGHT win about 5 games this year.

So many on this board never really saw our athletic programs in a real poor state.

Those late 90's made me a stronger fan. The issues this year only elicit a "meh" from me - things will get better, then worse, then better, then worse - they always do. Plus, we run academically successful programs, turning out true student athletes PLUS we have the Yordon Center, Barsema Hall, a new Alumni Center - all based on the current success of the Athletic programs and the football team in specific.

We will survive, and will be better long term. Supporting your alma matter is a long term proposition, not a game by game decision.

Does your history go back more than 7 years? Did you do any research on this topic at all?

They will win way more games than that.

In 1976 we finished the basketball season 5-21, and went 1-10 in football equalling the overall "worst" record of 6-31.

Even though we are 0-3, we've been in position to win two of three games. It's not like we are so bad that the games are over before we even step onto the field. Our bad teams in '76 and '98 were just terrible, this year's team not so much!

03-puke that was such a horrible year, lots of bad memories. the football team is down this year but the future is so bright for NIU its very exciting. we have come so far since those years but if you sat through them then you can sit through almost anything.

Nice find in 1976. I did not think there was such a bad year as 1998. I will say this, this could be the worst basketball team we have seen yet. 19 players and most of them never played together and under this coaching system. Pancratz is out for the year and Yelder is not up to par at this point. NOT GOOD! I don't even think the coaches have faith in this season. HOWEVER, the future could be bright. At least I hope so.

The Women will be excellent, maybe best in the MAC. They have more dept and talent than I can ever remember.

bad memories? i was a freshman in 98 and got to be a part of tearing down the goal posts to end the losing streak. that was a great memory!

In 1998, NIU football was 2-9, not 0-11.

I was on the field as well tearing that goal post down. I still take the 2003 season over the 1998. You are right though, that was my football highlight while I was an NIU student. Still not sure how nobody was hurt when those things came down. Slumo and I personally carried a garbage can to the lagoon, good times.

Depends on how you define "1976." In the 1976-1977 season, which would have started at the end of the 1976 football season, and would have been completed during the 1976-1977 school year, we went 13-14, 10-6 in the MAC, for a combined 14-24.

Good catch, I was referring to the basketball season that concluded in 1976, the last year with Emory Luck as coach. The 1976-77 team which finished 13-14 was the first team coached by John MacDougal.

RE: 2007- The Worst in our history.
Is everybody going off of memory here? I know where to find historical football records, yet I can't find the same for basketball. My own entry would be football 1991, which was 2-9, with victories over Arkansas St and 1AA Illinois St, a truly awful team. I know the 1991-92 basketball team struggled. It was Brian Hammel's first year as coach and everyone (except for Mike Lipnisky) from the previous year's NCAA team had graduated. They may have ended up with more wins than I remember, but I know it was a hard slog.
