Fatty's to help flood victims with fundraising performance
http://www.daily-chronicle.com/articles/...news03.txt
By Eric Sumberg - Staff Writer
Quote:A local tavern is holding a fundraiser this weekend to benefit area residents displaced or affected by the recent flooding, and you're invited.
A portion of the proceeds from the Saturday night performance of Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors at Fatty's Pub and Grille in DeKalb will be donated to the DeKalb County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Saturday is the fourth annual NIU Football Season Kickoff Outdoor Party at Fatty's, 1312 W. Lincoln Highway. The party starts at 6 p.m., and Barron and his band, Time Bandits, will start performing at 9 p.m., after the Northern Illinois University home opener against Southern Illinois University.
“It's kind of a no-brainer,” Fatty's owner Jeff Dobie said.
Coors, Tool Time Rental, Bacardi and Absolut have donated money to help Fatty's defray the cost of putting on the event.
“We've got the perfect vehicle to raise this money,” Dobie said.
The impetus for the fundraiser was to help a former cook whose house was ruined by the flood. Dobie, who lives near the Kishwaukee River, said he wanted to do something for the community after seeing how much devastation the flood caused.
NIU cheerleaders will distribute fliers at the football game to help raise awareness of the show.
“If it works, we'll do it every year,” Dobie said.
Other area organizations and agencies have been reaching out to neighbors affected by the flooding. Hope Haven planned to host a furniture sale today at its facility at 1145 Rushmoore Drive in DeKalb. A Sycamore electrolysis center is donating half of the proceeds from hair removal packages bought in September to the local Red Cross chapter, according to classified ads it has run in the Daily Chronicle. And North Elementary School in Sycamore has been holding a clothing and toiletry drive for 53 of its students and their families who were affected by the flood.
The DeKalb County Flood Relief Committee met last week to discuss local response and resources available to area flood victims. Representatives from DeKalb County Community Services, Red Cross, the cities of DeKalb and Sycamore, Kishwaukee United Way, DeKalb County Community Foundation, The Salvation Army, the First Congregational United Church of Christ and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb attended the meeting.
