Florida State snaps their losing streak
by Drew Hankin
After losing five straight and six of their last seven games, the Florida State baseball team needed a break from the big boys of the ACC, so enter the Savannah State Tigers to snap the skid. And snap it they did, surrendering eleven runs on ten hits while only managing two singles of their own on offense. Three Seminoles had multi-hit games, and Bryan Henry got back on track with a strong outing after two straight rough outings against Miami and Georgia Tech.
Henry finally earned his ninth win of the season, going six complete innings, allowing just one hit and no runs. He also walked two and struck out six Tiger batters. Travis Burge, Brian Chambers and Luke Tucker each threw scoreless innings to finish out the final three frames for FSU.
After Henry set the tone in the top of the first by striking out two of the first three batters, the offense came to life in the bottom half of the inning with four runs. Center fielder Shane Robinson reached on an error by the Savannah State second baseman when he couldn't pick up the ball on a grounder between first and second. After right fielder Jack Rye put runners on the corners with a single to left-center, a wild pitch plated Robinson, and moved Rye to second base. A single through the left side by first baseman Dennis Guinn put runners on the corners again, and shortstop Buster Posey singled in his first of two runs in the game with a base hit through the right side. After Posey stole second, designated hitter Tommy Oravetz hit a two-RBI single to left-center that gave the Tribe a 4-0 lead.
The FSU offense went back to work in the next inning when Robinson led off with a walk and went to second on another wild pitch. After a sacrifice bunt by Rye moved Robinson to third, third baseman Ryne Malone hit his 10th home run of the season, a shot over the screen in right, that gave Florida State a 6-0 lead.
SSU starter Marcus Cortes settled down and kept the Seminole bats in check until running out of gas in the sixth inning. Rye led off that frame with a single and went to second on a throwing error by the first baseman. After Guinn was hit by a pitch, Malone reached on another Tiger error that loaded the bases with nobody out. An infield single by Posey allowed Rye to score FSU's seventh run, and a walk to Oravetz plated the Seminoles' eighth. Catcher Danny Diaz then singled in two more runs with a base hit through the left side, and Oravetz scored the final run of the game on a passed ball by the Savannah State catcher.
The win was the fourth shutout of the season for FSU, and the 14th time that Seminole pitchers have combined for ten or more strikeouts. The Noles improved to 34-10 on the season while SSU fell to 27-17. Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 7:00 with Tyler Chambliss (9-2, 2.11 ERA) on the hill for Florida State.
