Tallahassee, FL - Legendary Florida State Head Coach Mike Martin continues to reach milestones and set records. Earlier this year it was announced he would be inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. After his club downed Minnesota 12-4 Saturday, the Seminole head coach is in even rarer company. Martin became just the eighth coach in collegiate baseball history to record 1,400 wins and he is just the third coach in DI baseball to reach that milestone and have a career winning percentage of .700 or better.

"This program is about our team," said Martin after the historic win. "I am just very blessed and proud to be a part of the Florida State team. We have a great administration. We have a great staff. We have been fortunate to keep everybody around and I am just fortunate to be a part of it."

Martin is now 1,400-473-4 in his 27 seasons in Tallahassee. His winning percentage of .747 trails only retired Texas coach Cliff Gustafson (.792) and current Wichita State boss Gene Stephenson (.754) among DI coaches. Only three coaches in the history of college baseball have won more games and have a higher winning percentage than Martin, who is now sixth all-time in all divisions for wins by active coaches.

"It feels really good one a day like this versus a team like Minnesota," said Dennis Guinn on being a part of Martin's 1,400th win. "It felt great to be a part of getting him that win. I know he will smile for the rest of the day and it feels good to play a part in that."

"Getting the win today for Coach Martin gave us tons of motivation," said FSU winning pitcher Michael Hyde. "Of course he never brought it up because he isn't that type of guy. It was just another ballgame for him that he wanted us to go out and get the win. It doesn't matter to him if it is win 1,400 or just the second of his career. I was glad to be a part of it as was the rest of this team."

Guinn and Hyde both played the biggest roles in getting that 1,400th win for Martin as FSU improved to 9-1 on the season and Minnesota fell to 0-2. Guinn had a career day going 4-for-4 with four RBIs, two runs scored, a double and his first career grand slam. The sophomore also drew a walk and didn't strike out once. He set new career highs for RBIs and hits in a game and is now tied for the team lead with three homeruns.

"I can't remember the last time I had four hits in a game," said Guinn. "I tried to stay focused throughout the game against a good team like Minnesota."

Hyde, who was now 2-0 and making his first start of the year, went five innings and after allowing two runs in the first didn't allow another run to score the rest of the way. He struck out four batters and walked two as he upped his record to 2-0 on the season.

"I was a little shaky in the first inning but I was able to settle down and start throwing more around the zone," said Hyde when asked about his performance. "I was making my pitches a little better and just letting my defense work behind me. I finished pretty strong but just started losing gas towards the end."

"Michael had a good outing after that shaky first inning," said Martin. "That is to be expected. He was enjoying his first start of the year versus a very good baseball team. Minnesota is going to contend for the Big Ten title. We are getting them at the right time."

The Golden Gophers got off to a good start early versus Hyde. After a leadoff single and stolen base, Hyde got the next two batters before Minnesota staged a two-out rally. An RBI single and an RBI double staked the Gophers to an early 2-0 lead.

Minnesota starter Cole DeVries (0-1) ran into trouble in the bottom of the second when he gave up a hit and walked back-to-back batters on nine pitches. With the bases loaded the Seminoles were unable to close the gap though as DeVries got out of the jam on a grounder to short.

In the bottom of the third FSU threatened to get on the board once again. Jack Rye drew a walk and Ryne Malone then singled to put two on with just one out. Another walk, this one to Guinn, loaded the bases for the second straight inning. DeVries fifth walk of the game brought in FSU's first run making it a 2-1 game with the bases still juiced. Buster Posey then singled in two runs putting FSU in front 3-2. Designated hitter Kyle Maxie then drove in another run on a single to left knocking DeVries out of the game. New pitcher Kyle Carr couldn't stop the rally though as Tony Thomas, Jr. drove in two more runs on a sharply hit single up the middle.

Walks continued to haunt Gopher pitchers as the staff's eleventh of 13 walks on the day loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half of the fifth. Guinn then unloaded them with just one swing of the bat as he hit FSU's first grand slam of the year making the FSU lead 10-2. It was the first FSU grand slam since May 7, 2005 when Gibbs Chapman did it versus Maryland in a 7-2 Seminole win.

"It was a full count and I battled and fouled a couple pitches off," said Guinn of the grand slam. "He threw me a full count curve ball. It is my job to make guys pay when they make a mistake. He left it over the plate."

"Dennis has played very solid baseball," said Martin when asked about his first baseman who is hitting .351 and slugging .676. "He has to continue to get better. That ball he ran into in the fifth inning was a big lift for us. It certainly kind of closed it out."

In the top of the seventh the Golden Gophers looked to cut the FSU lead as they loaded the bases off reliever Jimmy Marshall. Marshall walked in the first run of the inning and the Gophers got their fourth of the game on an out but that was all they could muster off Brent Marsh who came in with one out and shut down the potential big inning.

The Seminoles got a run back in the bottom of the seventh as Rye singled, Malone walked and Guinn continued with his big day knocking a double off the screen in right. A double into shallow center field by pinch hitter Josh Spivey brought in another run for FSU as they went in front 12-4.

So if I remember correctly, Mike had 2 different pitchers starting on Saturday and Sunday. Wonder if they find another Sunday pitcher???

Hyde threw in place of Chambliss, because Tyler will pitch against
the 'Gates on Tuesday.

But, I thought that Browning started yesterday. He's in the normal
weekend rotation.

Browning did start and had a shaky start at that... giving up runs in the 2nd inning. But he got it under control for the next 3 innings. There were several relief pitchers, and the last one in the top of the ninth had a terrible outing... giving up 2 more runs.
