Maryland senior basketball forward Travis Garrison appeared before a Prince George's County District Court commissioner Friday and was formally charged with second-degree assault and a fourth-degree sex offense, according to court documents obtained by The Sun.
The incident reportedly occurred at 1:15 a.m. Oct. 27 at the Cornerstone Grill and Loft in College Park. The victim alleged that Garrison, 21, grabbed her buttocks three different times, despite her objections. According to the documents, she was forced to push Garrison away and he hit her in the face with his hand, causing her lip to bleed. The woman left the bar shortly after and reported the incident to the Prince George's County Police Department. She filed for charges in late December.
Garrison was released on his own recognizance, but is not allowed any contact with the woman, and cannot go back to the Cornerstone.
Both of the charges are misdemeanors. For the charge of second-degree assault, Garrison faces 10 years in jail and/or a fine of $2,500. He faces up to a year in prison and/or $1,000 fine for the charge of a fourth-degree sex offense. His trial is set for April 7.
Senior guard Chris McCray is listed as a witness.
There was no answer at Garrison's home in Suitland, and coach Gary Williams was unavailable for immediate comment. Garrison has not missed any games this season, and has started in nine. He is averaging 9.7 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Terps (11-4, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference).
