RE: Official Football Study Thread
The secret/quiet capital campaign is starting in October. We'll see more the closer it gets to October. It's going to take some big shots to pull those kinds of numbers. A phone-a-thon just isn't going to cut it with those numbers and our limited number of alumni. Corporate sponsor the stadium and be done with it.

Louisville has Papa Johns Stadium, plenty of more example. I don't see the problem with it. Get together an actual plan that states, if we had the funding, this is where we would build. This is how it would look and this is where Company-X's name would go for $5 million dollars.

Unfortunately for us at Kennesaw, all of the ETSU fans have pointed out just how small a market we live in in the backwoods of Georgia. It will be next to impossible for us to find a legitimate business that would sponsor our stadium. Perhaps if we pool together all the workers at our one local Walmart, then we could get a head start for the campaign.

I think we should look bigger than Walmart employees, lets go dig out the mom and pop's pocket book and just start writing checks. A few of those are bound to go through!

At any rate, we're going to need some big help from the people around the trustees and the companies located in our back yard, not to mention the local governments (Cobb, Kennesaw, Acworth, Woodstock, Marietta) that could get behind a Cobb county football team. We'll see what the people close to the efforts find out on just how feasable a number like that is. Student fees going up like normal. I would be more shocked if they didn't go up one year. KSU still isn't in line with the other tuitions around the state as far as I know. 15% each year for 4 years sound better than 40% though.

Northside News Article in current issue (August 2007 Acworth/Kennesaw circular)

Umm, it's not online but only 400 or so words so here goes:

Quote:Owls to throw footballs at KSU?
KSU Hoping to Bring Football to Campus

Mike Whitfield

Kennesaw State University, which started as a small junior college but became a University in 1996, is hoping to improve their public awareness by bringing football to its 20,000-student college. The idea of bringing college football to Kennesaw excites many current and former KSU students.

Dan Hosterman of Smyrna, who recently graduated from KSU, said, "I think that a football team at KSU would not only be good for the school, but the community as well. There is a lot of good football talent coming out of high school in Cobb County. It's a great opportunity for those kids that get overlooked by the bigger schools to play at the next level".

But you might want to wait to buy face paint and your owl suit because Dr. Dan Papp, the University President, estimates the earliest a football team would strap on their helmets for a game would be 2010.

A survey completed last summer including long-time residents and several groups showed that a football program was on top of the list regarding KSU's visibility.

However, the survey also showed there would be several obstacles: getting the money and land needed for practice fields and a stadium, annual operating money, and, don't forget, getting a coach. Bill "the tuna" Parcells, who is a retired NFL would be a cool fit for the Owls. Don't get excited; I'm just saying it would be cool.

A fund raising campaign will be needed to raise the necessary $34 million. This fall, KSU plans on surveying the students to get their feedback regarding a potential increase in athletic fees. But anything is possible when people really want something.

Now, to drive just around fifteen minutes to a college football game would be as cool as the other side of the pillow. But seriously, the reality is taht it will depend on the success of the fundraising campaign. The report from the survey did state that KSU is capable of launching a big campaign, and the initial goal would be between $15 - $20 million.

It also encourages developing two committees; one committee will focus on funding current athletics, while the second committee will focus on funding new sports, including football. KSU is planning on going ahead with the fundraising in the near future and whether football will become more than just a visiion will rely on how well KSU moves ahead with raising the money.

"The Kennesaw State Owls win their first football game" just may be a headline you read several years from now. As excited - yet anxious- community, we will just have to sit back and find out.

As one KSU alumni said, "Who doesn't like going to a college football game? KSU will finally become the complete university it has been working to become for years."

A few notes I had.
1. This is probably typed in the 98-99 percentile on accuracy (based on my past experiences) and the numbers are double checked as printed.
2. Looks like this was edited by the local paper it was printed on and if I had to guess, it's a former student (bias, conflict of interest)
3. $34 million - ok, maybe a typo on the printed version. $35 seems to be the real number rather than a precise $34.
4. Bill Parcells? WTF... Should have been clipped in editing and further evidence of conflict of interest, bias.
5. 2010, interesting they have a year for the projected first game. '10 is not that far off though, reasonable if the ball is rolling

Things are starting to look up with the football talk. A couple years ago there wasnt nearly as much articles or press on KSU starting football.

We all want football, i'm just wondering how their going to present this to the students in the fall.

I like it too. I doubt the students will be asked anytime soon. If they're looking for 2010, the students enrolled now will be seniors or gone. It's this quiet phase that keeps getting mentioned. I doubt anyone will see/hear much until 10-15 mil is raised for football.

Really? Then that's pretty cool. I just think there's a lot more Fine Arts students that aren't actually keen on football than the more outspoken sports fans think.

New Article from AJC:

Quote:For Kennesaw State, football at what cost?
Financing, new stadium are Owls' top concerns

By STAN AWTREY
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 08/08/07

Dave Waples lovingly removes the model football helmet from a shelf in his office. It's black with a yellow stripe, and a yellow owl is emblazoned on the side. Think Pittsburgh Steelers, only more nocturnal.

Creating that part of the Kennesaw State football program was easy. The next part — forming a team, building facilities and funding college's most expensive sport — won't be as simple.

Waples, the athletics director at Kennesaw for 18 years, is unabashedly in favor of adding the sport. He was at Valdosta State when that school added football in 1982 and has been a proponent of adding the sport since he arrived at the Cobb County institution.

President Daniel S. Papp, who played football as a young man and was surrounded by the sport during his tenure at Georgia Tech, is more pragmatic. "I tell people I'm a football agnostic," Papp said. "The bottom line is it's an economic decision."

The school recently completed a feasibility study that showed most shared Waples' point of view; 66 percent of those surveyed said the school "should definitely" start a program, while only 18 percent said no.

"Every time I walk across the campus, I get asked by somebody, 'Dr. Papp, when are we going to start football?' " Papp said. "We know the interest is there."

But before ordering shoulder pads and girdles, the school has many decisions to make. Most of the choices are tied to price tags.

Playing options
Once the school makes the decision to play, the next crucial step will be deciding at which level to compete.

Kennesaw could opt for the non-scholarship approach, which would mean joining the Pioneer Football League and competing against schools like Davidson, Jacksonville and Drake. That would cost $1 million to $1.5 million a year.

The Owls, who currently compete in the football-bereft Atlantic Sun Conference, could choose to join a Division I-AA league like the Big South or Ohio Valley Conference. That would put them in competition with the likes of Liberty, Presbyterian, Jacksonville State and Eastern Illinois. That would cost $2.5-3 million a year.

Or Kennesaw could take the big plunge and dive in with the big dogs of Division I-A. Such a move will get a school on the ESPN highlight reel, but it will cost $5-6 million a year. That equates into a lot of bucks per booh-yah.

"That would put you in an elite group," Waples said. "You'd be in the same room with Georgia and Georgia Tech and Oklahoma. Now, you'd be in the back of the room, away from the stage, but you'd still be in the room."

Waples said whatever decision the school makes must be made with a long-term strategy in mind.

"You have to look 20-30 years down the road and see where we want to be," Waples said.

In addition to the funding question, Papp's other concerns are where the team will practice, play and park, as well as how the addition of football will tilt the school's Title IX numbers.

Where to build, and for how much
Currently, there is no room on the landlocked campus to build the 20,000-seat stadium that will be needed. Papp said the school will not compromise the current green space. Playing at a high school stadium is a short-term option, but no one involved wants to build a permanent facility that's 20 miles from campus. Officials are now looking into some close-to-campus options.

Meanwhile, a quiet campaign to test the financial fortitude of contributors has started. Now the administration will need to sell the school's 20,000 students on raising the activity fee by $30-45 per semester; students will be surveyed this fall. Football plans can't go ahead without a firm commitment from both groups.

"If we get positive answers to all four questions, it would probably be three years at best before you could start playing," Papp said. "You have to get the money flowing in, build what you need to build and recruit a coaching staff."

RE: Official Football Study Thread
What do you guys think? I say go for the gusto and make the jump to Football Subdivision. 5-6 mil a year made up of student fees and donations. I always thought it was cheap to go to Kennesaw compared to pretty much everywhere else. UGA is a few hundred more, Tech is more plus all downtown expenses, Auburn is rediculous, out of state is outragious, I don't know about Southern...

I got in on the bargain and so did everyone here but in the next few years it's time to put it in line with other universities instead of being that frugal school who gets looked down on for not having a football team.

I am pumped up! I say go all the way as well. I hope a lot of people around Cobb and Atlanta have read all of the articles on KSU football. I will start telling every student I see this fall about how we need to raise our athletic fees.

If they raised athletic fees just $50 a semester they would be up to $167 and at 20000 students thats over 6 million a year not counting any summer fees.
I am down 03-2thumbsup

It's not hard to find this answer for a sports fan. I've said it once but I think there's a lot of silent opposition. Ask ETSU :)

Just how much, I have no idea.

Silent opposition? Yuck. They can get over it and pay an extra 50 bucks. Well as long as we have more support that is all that matters.

Yeah, i freakin agree... something that you can actually come back to is well worth an extra 100/yr. Hell it's worth a lot more, I would have gladly paid it and then some, but I'm not everyone. Maybe I can start making the big bucks and contribute back

I'm down, I'll talk to the bookstore manager, Sharon about it. I know Striped Crew is focussed on raising awareness of current programs. Don't know who would pick up the costs.
