That's interesting. Was there some kind of push for new safety measures in the 80s and early 90s? Seems like accidental deaths dropped quite a bit around then, 30-40%.

I think there was a big push for quality in manufacturing, spurred on particularly by the failed rescue mission of the Iranian hostages (at least for military manufacturing).

Commercial manufacturing also got a big interest in quality, after people got tired of their Gremlins and Pintos, and started buying Civics and Corollas.

Sounds like there was a major shift in the military in the early 80s. Link
