Ndiaye suspended for delaying flight

Makhtar Ndiaye, a minor-league basketball player, was suspended for one game without pay for a comment to airport security that delayed a team flight.
The US Airways flight, which originated at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport and was bound for Huntsville, Ala., was delayed for more than an hour on Sunday after Ndiaye's comment to a gate agent was deemed a security breach.
Ndiaye, a member of the North Charleston Lowgators of the NBDL, was questioned by airport security and not allowed to board the US Airways flight to Huntsville. Ndiaye is a native of Senegal who played at the UNC.
Reached by phone last night, spokesman John Bronson of US Airways said he had no information about the flight. But a passenger on the flight told The Huntsville Times that Ndiaye used the word "bomb" in a joking manner as he was preparing to board.
Passengers on the flight had to exit the plane and return to the airport terminal for another security screening. One of the passengers, Nancy Mohlere of Huntsville, said luggage was removed from the plane and a bomb-sniffing dog was brought on board.
Ndiaye, who wasn't arrested, flew to Huntsville aboard a Delta Air Lines flight, but was suspended by the NBDL for Monday's game
"I deeply regret making an inappropriate comment while passing through security at Charlotte/Douglas International airport," Ndiaye, 28, said in a statement released by the NBDL. "I meant no harm, but now realize how wrong it was and I am sorry to have disrupted so many people."
In 1998, NCAA basketball officials issued a public reprimand to Ndiaye for falsely accusing a Utah player at the Final Four of directing a racial slur at him.
Ndiaye, then a senior at UNC, said that Utah freshman Britton Johnsen used the epithet during North Carolina's national semifinal loss to the Utes. Two days later, Ndiaye admitted he made up the accusation.
