College drinking and substance abuse

I don't think that the solution is to ban advertising or keeping a stupid drinking age of 21. The solution is to find out WHY people are doing what they're doing and finding out ways to prevent the abuse-as-solution problem.

Your thoughts?

When Christians say this very thing, they get 04-chairshot . I think it's funny how the US keeps coming back to the conclusions that Christians have had for centuries.

I remember hearing a speaker a few years ago comparing alcohol abuse in our culture and others, usually European. One conclusion for the larger abuse that we have came from the lack of showing responsible drinking to children. In effect young adults are never taught or shown how to drink moderately, so once the magical age hits they go all out.

Banning advertising will do nothing to decrease the amount of drinking. Kids drink in college b/c they're on their own for the first time and can get away with it. They don't see a commercial for beer and all of a sudden decide to drink. They drink b/c it's the social thing to do in college. Everyone knows that when you have kids who are on their own for the first time, away from the rules of mommy & daddy, they're going to do irresponsible things.

I agree with this. In our country, alcohol is viewed as a "forbidden fruit" until you reach the age of 21. Whereas in Europe, children are raised to drink responsibly and in moderation (say, with a small glass of wine at dinner). While drinking overall may be higher in Europe, you dont see the massive binge drinking and abuse that you do in the US.

Well good for you.

I'll have your share, then. :drinky2:

I find that it's always a good idea to have a few non-drinkers in your friend circle.

Most money I ever made in college was being the only 21 year-old on my hall.

I grew up in NOLA back when the drinking age was 18.

Only for people who act like asshats. If you're cool about it, then it never becomes an issue.

The raising of the drinking age is a failure in almost every regard. Irresponsible behavior can be seen by those of ALL ages at your local bar every weekend. Yet nobody takes away their right to consume. Yet those losing limbs on our behalf in Iraq can't walk into a bar when they get home on leave and knock back a cold one? Ridiculous.

If 18 is old enough and responsible enough to make a willfull, deliberate decision to carry a loaded deadly weapon around Baghdad and kick some doors in and face combat, its old enough to drink responsibly.
