Ed Nelson, Georgia Tech (37)
Julius Hodge, N.C. State (31)
B.J. Elder, Georgia Tech (5)
Ilian Evtimov, N.C. State (3)
Jawad Williams, North Carolina (2)
Josh Powell, N.C. State (2)
Daniel Ewing, Duke (2)
Keith Jenifer, Virginia (2)

Ed Nelson had a very solid year...but I think it was pretty clear after the ACC tourney who the best freshmen in the ACC was.

I'm not too big on awards. But hopefully this will light a fire under Hodge and he'll break out in the NCAA tourney (his team is in the tourney).

This just goes to show that the voters do pay attention when one of your players goes thug life on another player in the league.

Stat comparison...

Hodge:

26.5 minutes per game
9.8 points per game
4.8 rebounds per game
2 assists per game
0.9 steals per game
74% FT
51 turnovers
NC State NCAA tourney bound

Nelson:

25.5 minutes per game
8.5 points per game
6.9 rebounds per game
0.6 assists per game
0.6 steals per game
56% FT
55 turnovers
GT no NCAA or even NIT tourney

Hodge has also scored in every game he's played in. Nelson has been held scoreless in 3 games. Nelson's biggest game has been 18 points (twice) and he's pulled down 14 rebounds in one game. One of those 18 points games was against IUPUI (also known as ooey-pooey). Hodge has had two 21 points game...one against undefeated and then #4 ranked Virginia at U-hall. The other 21 point game came against Wake Forest at Joel Coliseum.

Sometimes players get awards for big performances during the season. Other than the high point totals...the only games I can think of are Hodge's games against Wake Forest and UVa, him shutting down one of the nation's stop scorers in Lynn Greer (zero fields goals), and hitting that HUGE shot against Maryland in the ACC semis. I dont follow GT as much as I do State, so I might be missing Nelson's "moments". So if any GT fans want to chime in...they can.

Nelson has had a solid year...but I just feel that Hodge is more deserving.

Last time I checked Howard didn't attempt to go gangsta upside someone's head when they weren't even looking.

Stats are deceiving, and Nelson's contributions that don't show up on the box score must be taken into account. As for the team's post-season fate, that's somewhat irrelevant. Tech was just as deserving of a post-season bid, but a close defeat to Wake stopped them.

If you'll remember, Georgia Tech was getting raped on the inside the first half of the ACC schedule. Then Nelson stepped up on the inside and went toe to toe with people with a good 3.. 4 inches on him. Not only did he come out fine, but became a leader on the team and revived that pathetic inside defense that was in shambles.

And also, let's not forget... sportsmanship and behavior are a part of the *game* too.

Or maybe it was the Webber incident that cost him a spot on the 2nd team??
