ATLANTA, Ga. - The Virginia softball team dropped both ends of its Atlantic Coast Conference doubleheader with Georgia Tech 5-1 and 3-1 Sunday (March 31) at Glenn Field in Atlanta. The Cavaliers fall to 30-13 overall and 0-2 in the ACC with the losses, while Georgia Tech improves to 31-9 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

Center fielder Sara Wissman drove in all five Yellow Jacket runs in Georgia Tech's 5-1 win in the first game with a bases loaded walk in the first inning and a grand slam in the third. The Cavaliers had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when third-year third baseman Ruby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) hit a two-out solo home run. The homer was Rojas' sixth of the season and 16th of her career which moves her into second place on UVa's career home run list.

Fourth-year All-American Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) suffered the loss on the mound and fell to 15-5 on the season. Dennis gave up five runs on nine hits and walked two while striking out four. Georgia Tech's Erin Voeltz (10-4) earned the victory as she limited the Cavaliers to one run on five hits. She walked three batters and struck out two.

Dennis and second-year shortstop Heather Field (Lincoln, Calif./Lincoln) both went two for two with a walk apiece for Virginia in the first game.

In the second game, the Yellow Jackets' Kirin Kumar broke a 1-1 tie with single in the sixth inning that scored Wissman with what proved to be the game-winning run. Kumar then scored an insurance run when Katie Donovan drew a two-out bases loaded walk to make the final score 3-1. The Cavaliers broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning on Dennis' solo home run. It was her sixth homer of the season, which tied her with Rojas for the team lead. Georgia Tech capitalized on a pair of UVa errors to score its first run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 1-1.

First-year pitcher Valerie Sevilla (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) took the loss in the circle as she pitched the first 5.1 innings. Sevilla (6-4) gave up two runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits. Dennis pitched the final two-thirds of an inning and allowed one hit and one unearned run. She walked two batters and struck out one. Jessica Sallinger (15-4) picked up the win for the Yellow Jackets. She held the Cavaliers to one run on three hits and struck out nine while walking four.

The Cavaliers return to action on Tuesday (April 2) when they host Marshall in a doubleheader at The Park. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
