Offensive lineman Gordie Sammis commits

UVa lands another behemoth

Gordie Sammis had hoped to wait until this weekend before going public with his football commitment to Virginia, but his secret didn't last until midweek.
Sammis, a 6-foot-5, 295-pound offensive lineman from Readington, N.J., said Tuesday that he had picked Virginia over Rutgers.

Pittsburgh was in the final three for Sammis, who also had offers from Vanderbilt, Temple and Wake Forest.

Sammis made All-Mountain Valley Conference and All-Somerset County as a junior at Imaculata High School, located 15-20 minutes from Rutgers' campus.

"Distance wasn't a consideration," Sammis said. "You can't beat the education [at Virginia] and, at the same time, it's a beautiful campus. I'll be able to play for the national title with all the good recruiting classes they're bringing in."

Sammis went to UVa's camp, where he became good friends with Marshall Ausberry, an offensive lineman who committed to the Cavaliers on Monday.

"He said he'd commit if I committed," Sammis said.
